Default Flames Record After Olympic Break 2014

My friend was saying that the Flames had the second best record after the Olympic break in 2014. He likes to extrapolate this success form this period to the current year, which if their record was second best would be very good. I have forecasted that the flames will finish in the bottom five for 2014/2015.

Would appreciate knowing the Flames record after the Olympic break.

Thanks!

We were 22-29-7 before the break.
13-11-0 after it, which certainly would not have been second best in the NHL.

Also, extrapolating the end of the season into expectations for this year is an excellent path to disappointment.

13-10-1 with 2 SO wins.

Very true. Every single year we do better in the last part of the season and it gives everyone false hope. Old management made the mistake of using that as an excuse to keep the team together. Yeah we had a better record. But the season isn't won during the last 20 games. Every team goes through hot streaks and ours always seems to be near seasons' end.

I believe that record would extrapolate out to 92 points over 82 games, which would still be outside the playoffs.

and only if the team could sustain it. History suggests that this is not how things work from one season to the next.

Yeah, lots of kids at the end playing on adrenaline.

Expecting those kids to be able to sustain the same success for 6 months and 82 games is a recipe for failure.

Not to mention that many of our post-Olympic wins came against bad teams. The Islanders twice, the Sabres, the Devils, the Oilers twice, the Panthers.

Once the good teams separate themselves from the also-rans, they start their backup goalies and can start a weaker lineup. Also the also-rans are taken for granted and the losers no longer have any pressure, so there is a psychological affect also.

i think your friend should use the revenge factor - last year the flames lost 40 times, so they will be looking for revenge this year for each one of those losses (80 points); however, they won 35 times (70 points), so those teams will be looking to extract thier pound of flesh - the net of this is that the flames should increase by 10 points this year.......the revenge factor.......
