New NHL Awards?
Reading the discussion about the Norris nominations made me think - if you could add any award to the NHL's current line-up, what would you add?
Here's mine...
* Wayne Gretzky Award - Most Assists
* Bobby Orr Award - Most Points (D-man) and the Norris can focus more on best d-man who logs big minutes, plays against top lines, hits, has good +/-, etc.
* Taylor Hall Award - Best Corsi Rating

I definately think they have to revamp the Norris for sure. The other major awards that we already have are fine but it bugs when a guy like Karlsson, who is such a #1 Dman that he plays the 6th most PK minutes per game of the Senators 6 Dmen is likely to win his 2nd trophy in the past 3 (4?) years. It aint right.

I like the addition of a trophy for most points by a defenseman. I would also like to see a peer-voted award for defenseman similar to the Lindsay.
Maybe, Paul Coffey trophy for most points and the Bobby Orr trophy for best defenseman as voted by his peers? The Norris could remain a writer's award.

The most points for defense is a good idea. Vlassic played on the Olympic team over Subban for a reason.
Maybe something for best player over 35. Call it the Jagr/Howe award.

Are you saying you would choose Vlassic over Subban on your hockey team?

Hey Subban could win two awards in one season!

I don't like the way the Norris and Hart are selected, but I'm not sure another award is the proper way to deal with it. Although on 2nd thought, a writer voted Dman award and a player voted Dman award would be interesting.
No need for an Assists trophy since the Art Ross exists.
I'm really happy they brought in the Rocket Richard trophy though. That was sorely missing in my opinion.

I think they should change who votes on them. Then you might get the people who actually deserve it. Why doesn't the NHLPA vote on all the awards? Or maybe coaches/asst coaches?

No kidding. Having journalists who have probably never laced up skates isn't the best idea.

didn't Iggy lose the Hart trophy in 2002 because a Montreal journalist wouldn't even put him on the ballot?

Yes, and then won the Pearson, the most outstanding player as voted by his peers.
And yet the Hart gets more clout? It makes no sense.

They name trophies after players - how about a trophy named after a team:
The Oiler Trophy for best tank job.
The silverware could be modeled on something like this:

I like the idea of having an offensive defenseman award and then making the Norris a defensive defenseman award. The position is dynamic enough that I think it warrants it.
