Proved himself to be a competent defender all camp. Good breakout passes and good footspeed. I can't believe there wasn't any interest in him elsewhere in the NHL.

There was. Detroit wanted to bring him in. He chose Calgary.

And completely unsurprising decision. He made a big impact with Hartley.

Decent signing for a 7th d-man. He can sit in the box most of the time and play occasionally.

When an injury hits one of the top 6, they can find room for Spoon or Sieloff.

Raphael Diaz agrees to a one-year deal with #flames after attending camp on a PTO. Defensive depth.

I think it's a good signing... He's a right shot i think and we have no Rhd prospects close, not blocking anybody and might return a pick at the deadline from a team looking for playoff depth with such a low salary.

Give em hell, Raffa.

Surprised we didn't give him a little more considering our ample cap space.

Surprised at people calling him a 7th defenseman...

The guy is going to replace Wideman on any sort of PP action he once had I bet.

At one point in Montreal he was playing a ppg and killing it on the PP before getting injured.

Widemad sucks

He has had good fancy stats the last couple of seasons I believe. He could be an underrated signing.

He'd also be a ready-made replacement for Wideman should he be dealt at the deadline.

I wonder if there isn't something in the works for Wideman with this signing?

That's a good point. Wideman 50% retained would have great value if he'll agree to move.

I guess they looked at waivers and didn't find a better option, so why not reward Diaz for a solid camp. I am happy about this, I thought he was decent in camp and having a cheap right handed option for the bottom pairing certainly doesn't hurt.

I'm definitely sure that Wideman would accept a trade to a playoff team. When he came here, we were still a bubble playoff team potentially.

Can we trade Wideman for an extra LW opening?
