Default Honorary Canadian Citizen

Well done. This girl is extraordinary and this generation's equivalent to the man who stopped the tanks at Tiananmen Square. We are about to make her an honorary citizen.

What does it mean to be an "honorary" citizen?

Agreed though, hell of a girl. She did more damage to the Taliban than any gun could.

Wiki says:

Quote:
Honorary Canadian citizenship is an honour wherein Canadian citizenship is bestowed by the Governor-General-in-Council, with the approval of parliament where appropriate, on foreigners of exceptional merit. It is a symbolic honour; the recipient does not take the Oath of Citizenship and thus does not receive any rights, privileges, or duties typically held by a Canadian citizen.

What is that supposed to mean? She'd still get turned away at the border since she doesn't receive any of the rights or privileges?

It's basically an attaboy certificate.

Except instead of your boss praising you for something, an entire nation praises you.

Just thought that this thread should be bumped as she was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize today. If anyone is curious, her book "I am Malala" is available for young readers and I think its good. My daughter is reading it to us for her home reading program, and while we are partway through I'm hoping that its empowering and uplifting.

The Nobel Peace Prize has had a few misses (Obama...) though looking at the list of past winners there are some good choices too. This is one of the years I think they got it right.
