Default Router keeps disconnecting

Hey guys, any help appreciated. I have a WRT54G that keeps losing internet connection. It'll work fine for a month or so, then for no obvious reason, loses connection. It gains it back after I unplug/plug it back and is good for maybe an hour or two or three or whatever then cycle repeats itself. It seems to fix itself for a few weeks or so, then starts again.

Drivers are updated...but it is quite old. Does it just sound like its time for a new router? If so, any recommendations?

This is probably very little help, but in my experience its usually just a crappy router.

I have one of those old blue and black Linksys routers with the antenna things and its damn near bulletproof. Also spent a bunch of money on a higher quality router and the thing was a hunk if junk.

Does it have the Linksys firmware on it? If so, I'd suggest re-flashing using the DD-WRT firmware.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/

Offers way more capabilities, and runs extremely stable.

Although, that is a pretty old router now, and the newer ones on the cheaper scale would still be quite better than the old WRT54G series of routers.

I was having the same problem and my 25 mbps I was paying for was speed testing at 7.5.
I bought one of these http://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTN66R/ because it was apparently easy to install myself, and it was, and it made a huge difference. I am now at or frequently above my 25 and no disconnect problem.

I think it was through Future Shop.

Thanks guys...due to the age of the old linksys, I just said screw it went out and bought a new one. Bought the D-Link AC1750. Probably more than we need, but it was on sale, $20 off. So far, so good.
