I'm pretty shocked at the discount here. 5 year term at bridge-contract rate? Ellis must be loving life in Nashville.

Good deal. I like Ellis, seems like a good young d-man with great offensive upside.

signing makes a bit more sense from Ellis' perspective when you look at the yearly breakdown:
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Ryan Ellis deal breakdown: 1.5 then 2 then 2.5 then 3 then 3.5

I was just looking at his salary history and it got me curious - are signing bonuses paid out on entry level deals when they slide? It looks like he got a signing bonus split over three seasons on his deal, but it slid in each of the first two years. Did he get paid that bonus in the first two years?

This could be a really nice deal for the Preds if he becomes a Torey Krug-type of guy.

Great contract for the preds, wow. Not sure way Ellis wouldn't ask for a shorter term though. Doesn't this but a couple UFA years?

Wow. Who is Ellis' agent? What a stupid contract. Is Ellis lacking confidence in himself and needs job security to perform?
A 23 year old offensive defenseman and former high first round pick who just cracked the NHL full time last season putting up 6 goals and 27 points should not be signing that contract.

Small, soft, and slow. Hard to imagine that he had too much leverage with the Preds
This seems like a pretty fair contract

Ryan is a ridiculously smart defenseman. I haven't seen too many that can read the game like he can. I loved watching him quarterback the powerplay. Not much got past him when he was on the blueline. He doesn't shine in Nashville like he would in other markets, because they have such a strong defense core. He is small, but his smarts make up for that. I think the contract is low. He will always be a favourite of mine.

I would agree 100% with this. This contract seems fair for what your getting. Watched a lot of him in junior, he was a good player on a great team. "Greg Nemisz ring a bell" His small size has caught up to him in the big show. I have never seen a defenceman have to turn his back on the play as much as this guy does. Lacks skating speed. Good contract for a 4-7th defenceman, will never be a top pairing guy.
