Red Deer Awarded the 2016 Memorial Cup
I am looking for confirmation, but a buddy that is close to the team just sent me a text.
First time it has been held in Alberta in 40 years.

Both the WHL and Roger Millions have tweeted about it, so I'd say it's confirmed.
That's crazy that it hasn't been held in Alberta since Calgary hosted in 1974.

Yeah that went through my head as well.
I know my son and daughter have been pushing me hard to get some.
It is a positive for the city.
This and 2019 Canada Winter games.

Medicine Hat is building a new arena, hopefully they get to host sometime soon.

What was the Calgary team in 74 and how did they finish?
Also, I heard on The Fan that the Hitmen cannot make a bid because they are owned by the Flames. Dunno the thoughts behind the rule but there ya go.

Is it that they are owned by the flames or that they share a building? Presumably if the Flames were to make the playoffs there would be all sorts of scheduling conflicts.

They probably just want to reward small town/city owners and not multi-billion dollar sports entertainment conglomerates

Does it not seem odd to anyone else that it'll be 42 years since Alberta last hosted?
Seriously that is a long ass time. It's not like Alberta hasn't had the CHL around either... what the hell happened?

They were called the Centennials and lost out in the WHL final to the Regina Pats. At that time there was no host team. Regina Pats, Quebec Remparts and the St Catherines Blackhawks were the teams involved.

It remains absolutely ridiculous that the Flames refuse to bid on the Memorial Cup. The league would practically kill someone to get the tournament here, but the Flames don't want to risk having a conflict between a Memorial Cup and the Flames in the THIRD ROUND of the playoffs.
Good on the Rebels though. Good organization, nice building. They will do well.

^ it is the chl's showcase event; why would they want to risk turning it into a sideshow.......to run the memormial cup you have games almost every night for a week - how could you manage that and keep the NHL playoffs moving........it would be a mamssive mess if the two ever collided

The NHL playoffs have taken a week off before between rounds. I don't see how hard it would be to have the NHL take the major weekend off; in fact get the TV rights involved and now you have a massive showcase for the up and coming talent.
Then if there is a scheduling conflict just do what the did in Colorado after Columbine- go to 2-3-1-1 instead of 2-2-1-1-1.

If necessary, you play the CHL game in the afternoon, NHL game in the evening. As to why the WHL would want a Calgary Memorial Cup? $ $ $ We are the league's biggest market with the best attendance. League head office is here, etc.
And lets face it. The Hitmen could have bid for 2016 with virtually zero risk of a conflict.

That is a pretty big building.
The Centrium only seats just under 7000.
