Default Wales Theatre - High River

To those who don't know, High River has it's own movie theatre that was originaly built back in 1927. The theatre was heavily damaged by the flood of 2013 and it took 15 months to get us to where we are today with the theatres grand reopening.

Due to the extensive renos that had to be done the building had to be brought up to today's building code standards. Everything from electrical to heating.

A brief history of the Wales theatre....

Quote:
In 1927, Highwood Theatre (the original name of the Wales Theatre) was built to accommodate both the live theatre and movies. With use of upholstered chesterfield chairs, imported from England, chromium and plate glass tiles in the foyer, ornate ceiling, air conditioning and hardwood floors made the theatre one of the most luxurious and best equipped in the province at that time.

The name was changed in 1935 to Wales to honour Edward, Prince of Wales, who homesteaded at nearby Longview.

Wales Theatre has seen it all, from the primitive 'storeroom theatres' and early films, through the silent movies and to the talkies and technicolor, cinemascope to wide screens.

Today, the Wales Theatre features one of the last free-standing balconies in Canada.

I generally hate watching movies in old theaters because the seats suck major balls. And there's usually no legroom for people over 6'. This one looks really cool because you get the old school vibe with what look to be comfortable, modern seats.

Syed Kidwai (the owner) added extra space between the seats for more leg room for tall people.

(Left to right) Rehana Kidwai, Syed Kidwai and Mayor Craig Snodgrass snip the ribbon, signifying the official reopening of the Wales Theatre. Photo by Lisa Taylor -

Quote:
Syed and Rehana Kidwai, accompanied by Mayor Craig Snodgrass, cut the ribbon in front of the theatre with the sign "So it begins" shining in the background.

The glimmer of relief and happiness that shone in Syed Kidwai's eyes was undeniable as the crowd cheered and applauded in excitement.

"Please come in and let us know what you think of the place," Kidwai said after he thanked the community for their support.

And with that, the crowd headed into the newly renovated building to take in all the new sights and sounds.

After over 15 months of struggling with the Disaster Relief Funding and hoping all his inspections would pass, Kidwai says he's very happy this day has finally arrived."It feels very good, you know," he says. "Like a load off your mind." -
Quote:
Standing outside, enjoying the sun and some free ice cream, Snodgrass took time out to reminisce about the High River icon.

"This is probably the most special opening I've done yet because of what it is," he says.

"This is where we all grew up as kids watching Star Wars and Grease, so this is a pretty special day.

"He says the Kidwai family has been through so much trying to get the theatre open again, and says he congratulates them on this huge success.

"This is a big day for High River to have that neon sign going again," Snodgrass says. "So it's pretty special." -
