I recently got back into homebrewing, and I must say I'm actually not that bad at it. I went a little more high tech, and started making my own worts, and kegging (no bottles). I've produced a few tasty Blue Moon copies and a dark stout that tastes like home cooked rye loaf, and they're easily as good as any micro brewery I've tasted.
Anyways, I know I can't SELL it, but does anyone know if I can trade it? I was thinking about posting an ad on Craigslist, where I would trade beer for something (no idea what) as I actually kind of enjoy making massive amounts of it. I was thinking about trading a cornelius keg full of beer to someone for lawn mowing/snow removal services or something along those lines.

Am I breaking the law here?
Was thinking of doing the same. How much was your set up? And how much is your output.
There's a guy in the city that sells cornelius kegs ($50) and CO2 cannisters (filled for $150 I think it was). I bought my regulator ($150) at the Vineyard on Fairmount Dr. and all the other equipment (carboys, fermenters) I've had for years. I use my stove and a massive pot for my wort, but it REEKS when I brew. Not to mention the smell in the fridge when I chill it.
I'm toying with the idea of making a full on set up in my garage.....but I'm afraid I might burn it down. Something like this
My output depends on how much my girlfriend puts up with my house smelling like a brewery.....but I'm making about 20 litres a week right now. I only have 3 kegs though, so I need to drain them within about 2 weeks of carbonating or I run out places to put all the beer.

My stepdad used to make wine. Sounds a lot like this. Only, his wine was ####ty. He cut corners. How do you find your beer?
Wine is easy to do. The alcohol content is high enough that you don't need to worry about bacteria setting it off and turning it into garbage. If it tastes like ass you just make a bad wine.....that's about it.
If you're careful with your sanitization it's not hard to make decent beer. Bacteria is your enemy though, so if you introduce any you'll get skunky beer. I had that happen to me once, so I'm OCD careful about it. Nothing worse than 3 weeks of work turning into bad beer because you didn't sanitize thoroughly. My beer tastes like any store bought beer you'll find.
I started with Brewhouse kits (premade wort) and it was pretty hard to screw up. They made decent (drinkable) beer that people would drink if I ran out of everything else. I did a lot of reading on them though, and you can "hack" the kits to produce some really, really good beer (award winning, in fact). I did that for a while, and have now switched to all grain. I'm not totally sold on it though.....for $50 I can hack a brewhouse kit and produce something that's better than an all grain beer that I made from scratch, and in half the time.
Anyways, I'd be happy to answer questions on it if anyone is interested. I'm no pro.....just a guy that loves beer and found a way to save a lot of money on it.

In all seriousness I think it's pretty cool what you're into. I've never had the time, funds, or motivation to do it myself.. but I can imagine it being pretty satisfying.
i have a friend who is trying to sell his brewing set up. he says it's about $5000 worth of equipment. if anybody is interested, drop me a line and i'll make the connection.
Bumping this old thread.... I figured it is as good a place as any to talk about home brewing.
I'm thinking of getting into it. Used to make wine when I lived with my parents. Tried a few beers as well but they seemed harder to nail down.
Now I am looking to get back into it and I thought it might be good to have a thread to discuss. Can a mod change the title or should I just start a new thread?

$5000 worth of equipment?
Does your buddy run a commercial brewery?
I'm trying to think of the ways to get to a $5000 used setup. He's either drastically overvaluing his gear or he's producing a staggering amount of beer.

Maybe beer making equipment was worth a lot more 20 months ago.

If you're in need of equipment I've got almost double what I really need. I'm able to part with a glass carboy and a smaller fermenting bucket. I got it for free, so I'm not looking for any $, just come pick it up.

PM if your interested.
Thanks! I need to head over to my parents and take stock of what I already have.
I know we have a few carboys and a large bucket (was for wine, but should be the same thing).
If anyone else is looking to get into it, I'll let them take you up on your generous offer.
We've brewed our first all-grain beer. An American Pale Ale.
It's almost done carbonating, but we couldn't wait and opened a bottle yesterday.
So good! I love a hoppy beer, so it was pretty much perfect for me. My brother found the finish a little bitter for his liking, but all in all, we are very happy with our first try.
My garage is slowly filling with beer stuff though. I'm going to have to clean stuff up if I hope to park in there this winter.

Make sure you got some way to control the temperature in there . Too jot will lead to some hot fermentation and the yeast will leave some nasty tasting byproducts too cold It will take forever to properly ferment and yeast to clean up.
If its cooler it would be perfect to make some lager.
