Taliban Attack on Pakistani school
Terrible news coming out of Pakistan today...
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/taliban...dead-1.2874449
Quote:
Taliban gunmen stormed a military-run school in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday, killing 126 people, officials said, in the worst attack to hit the country in years.
The overwhelming majority of the victims were students at the army public school, which has children and teenagers in grades 1-10. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the assault and rushed to Peshawar to show his support for the victims.
|
Quote:
The horrific attack, carried out by a relatively small number of militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban group, a Pakistani militant group trying to overthrow the government, also sent dozens of wounded flooding into local hospitals as terrified parents searched for their children.

Why kill kids? Will our species ever evolve past this kind of stuff or is it going to take the abolishment of all religion?

The pain caused by this will never go away for these families. There is no forgiving such a vile act. A purely evil thing.

"'God is great,'" the Taliban militants exclaimed, as they roared through the hallways of a Peshawar, Pakistan, school.
Then, 14-year-old student Ahmed Faraz recalled, one of them changed the narrative.
" 'A lot of the children are under the benches,' " a Pakistani Taliban member said, according to Ahmed. " 'Kill them.' "
By the time the hours-long siege at Army Public School and Degree College ended early Tuesday evening, at least 137 people -- most of them children -- were dead, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani said. More than 100 were injured, many of them suffering gunshot wounds.

First of all, disgusting. I hope the people who planned and carried this out suffer greatly.
Question though.... the media keeps mentioning that it is a "military school". I understand that Pakistan is a military dictatorship, but do they start training children as young as 6 to be soldiers? Not that anything can justify this terrible act... kids have no choice, but I am just wondering about the relevance of them saying it is a military school.

Not sure how one would drum up the support for this given that religious people in our society and across the globe aren't just a pesky minority that the rest want to get rid of. Not sure I see that changing for a long time either.
While I personally have no place for religion in my life at the moment, I am not too PC to admit that this is clearly a problem with one specific religion. While all religions have been involved in evil acts through out history, Islam is the one that is currently at the center of the overwhelming majority of religious themed atrocities. And while the number of followers of Islam willing to commit these acts may be a minority, the number of supporters and enablers they have within the religion is large.

This is a tremendous tragedy and illustrates why the only way to deal with these groups is to destroy them utterly and completely.
However and this is the nasty cynic in me, the internal war between the Government and Pakistan's ISI who work with these groups is coming to roost.

Taliban is evil.
How can anyone living in that country sympathize with them?
Even if you have a strong hate for the West.

I saw on Reddit that it was because, they believed, the kids' parents worked with America (since it's a military school).
What a bunch of cowards. Too afraid to take on men directly, so they mass kill children and women. I'm sure their God is going to give them exactly opposite of what they're expecting to achieve.

I wish Aliens came down to earth and dispelled every ridiculous religious belief man-kind still cherished.
Do you still think extremism would exist? Part of me does.
This goes behind religion. Its part of the culture.

Heartbreaking.
Not a smart move politically for that group either.

There are billions of people on earth that have "ridiculous religious beliefs" that aren't extreme and slaughtering innocents.

Once again, no it is not. As far as the modern interpretation of mainstream religious texts and teachings go, this is a crisis within one religion- thanks to a segment of that religion.

No Pakistan is not a military dictatorship, it is an islamic state the way Europe used to be a catholic state back in the day. Thats why they have a blasphemy law (exploited by many to get back at people).
The school itself is for the kids of military members as well as civilians. Same as a school here that is located near a military base which would house civilian and military kids.

So they aren't exactly Soviet Russia, but their leaders did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

Europe was never a state, Catholic or otherwise (the eastern portion of the continent is probably more heavily influenced by Orthodox Christianity and Islam), but I guess I see what you are saying. Basically Pakistan is like Spain or France 500 years ago.
