Default Cop Body Camera FTW

A firefighter in Oakland tried to claim racism in the way that he and his 2 sons (9 and 12yo) were dealt with when they beat a police cruiser to the scene of a possible break and enter.

The Oakland firefighter worked at the station, and saw a door ajar. He was surprised and 'cleared' the building, leaving his two sons out front. Someone else had seen it and called the cops. A single officer unit arrived to find the firefighter exiting the building and the two kids there.

The firefighter claimed that the officer was racist and that he was "in fear of his life of getting shot", that the officer held him and his sons at gunpoint and was rude.

He didn't know that the cop was wearing a body camera.

While the video isn't very good at all (something they may want to look at) the audio is crystal clear.

Yeah that cop couldn't have been nicer and more level headed.

That firefighter should be ashamed of himself.

What a joke. I don't think that officer could have handled that any better.

The anti-authority guys haven't chimed in yet. I wonder why?

I would suggest this encounter is how police handle the vast, vast majority of encounters, especially in Canada.

Of course they won't. They will pretend this entire thread and incident doesn't exist, and cherry pick their agenda. The comment threads on this thing across the web are hilarious. EVery single person that was screaming RACIST! vanished. Not one chimed back in to apologize for their comments about the Police Officer before the video surfaced, or go back on what they said. They are all MIA now, just like this firefighter. They are probably dreaming up excuses about how this was somehow photo shopped, or haxored into making the cop look good. Plus there is a sale on Reynolds tin foil at Walmart today, so they are too busy buying it all up to respond.

This Firefighter should be fired. His lies could have lead to more civil unrest in a city that has already had massive problems with rioting. Such a dumb ass. Also, what a horrible precedent to set as a father.

I agree body cameras for the win. It goes both ways by protecting both the cops and the public.

I've always been a huge fan of body and dash cameras, because while it's a sad state to say as much...EVERYONE behaves that much better with each other when they realize there is proof and evidence of any shenanigans that go on.

as an aside in a recent phone conversation with one of those solicitors that want to fix my computer, my language got a bit colourful. He told me that our conversation was being recorded so I better clean up my language. It had no effect on my choice of words.

I was going to say, that reminded me a lot of how Calgary Police act and sound. Dominant and in control, but not militaristic and antagonizing, when there are unknowns and possible danger.

Then polite and courteous once the situation has been defused.

Well, a phone call with a solicitor isn't likely to inflame public opinion. Also, it's not illegal to get 'salty' in one's language with someone else. It's rude, and "not nice"...but it's far from illegal.

I have had to explain that to far too many people at work.

And while we're at it, there is no such thing as "verbal assault". It's a made-up American concept that when 'you' use it, just makes 'you'...frankly...sound dumb. You can be insulted, offended, threatened or intimidated verbally...but assault actually requires a physical element present, or clear indication to carry out a physical element. At which point it's not verbal assault, it's just plain assault

(Yes, that's a big pet peeve of mine)
