Default Giordano #1 and Brodie #4 in all of league Corsi numbers

In terms of possession numbers using the Corsi stat system Giordano finished 1st in the NHL amongst defensemen and Brodie finished #4. For reference Chara was #6 and Doughty was #9.

Would that make Brian Burke proud?

Seriously though do you think they have a decent chance of repeating that performance this year?

Shot attempts for vs against if I understand it correctly. A corsi of 55% for example means your team had 55% of the total shot attempts while you were on the ice

I was introduced to advanced stats by my friend who is an oiler fan (of course).

Therefore I think they're dumb.

However still impressive considering the roster we iced last year.

I'm not entirely clear on what you're claiming or predicting.

Last year the top dman was Jake Muzzin.

Other dmen in the top 10 last year were:

Marc Andre Bergeron
Henrik Tallinder
Patrick Wiercioch
Thomas Hickey
Bobby Sanguietti

Imagine that defence if you could get it, 6 top 10 Corsi dmen

Muzzin Bergeron
Tallinder Wiercioch
Hickey Sanguietti

I wonder how many Cups in a row a team like that could win.

Actually you picked the wrong year. The link you gave is for the 2012-2013 season.

The stat site I visited listed them as #1 and #4, however if you check your link and pick 2013-2014 season you'll see they were #1 and #3. Also if you use the filter for 60 games played instead of the 20 you had selected they are #1 and #2 in the league.

Good catch

http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_stati...34+45+46+63+67

Top ten from last year included

Number 3 - Martin Marcinin of the Edmonton Oilers. This is a definitely a stud the Oilers can build around, the 3rd best Corsi dman in the NHL last season.

Other gems included Orlov, Gardiner and Muzzin.

The year before (the one I incorrectly linked to) Shane O'Brien was 23rd using that stat in the entire league and we bought him out a year later. Maybe we should have kept him around to see if he regained his elite Corsi status this year.

You are using the relative corsi, the site I visited was the puck possession corsi and Shane Obrien was #235 in the league for defensemen. Puck possession is the number I'd go with, as it had Chara at #6 and Doughty at #9. You could probably build around those guys.

This is the problem with Corsi. If the Flames had two of the best defencemen in the league last year why did they finish 27th?

I'll see if I can find it again. I know I have a midseason link as well somewhere that has a really nice description for Corsi and all it's faults and some of it's positives.

Sorted by Corsi On (shot attempt differential); no Flames in top 20+.

Terrible goaltending at the start of the year, a stretch where Gio was injured, and a terrible forward core.

The opposite side of that coin is "Why didn't the flames finish 30th?" Because Gio and Brodie kept this team afloat.

That's where it becomes fun to figure out if Brodie and Giordano are 1 and 4 in puck possession does that mean the forwards aren't able to convert that possession into shots. They played against the other teams top forwards typically and still had top possession numbers. Or is the stat really flawed?

Jeff Petry is the 5th best dman in the NHL and Ryan Suter is the 201st best dman

Peter Harrold is better than Shea Weber

The thing I am worried about is how good will the Oilers defence be this year

Petry - 5th best in the NHL
Fayne - 28th best in the NHL
Marincin - 41st best in the NHL
Nikitin - 59th best in the NHL

When you have 4 dmen in the top 60 in the entire NHL you are stacked. That is a sick top 4 to be able to roll out against anyone.

Looking at the top 100 on that list it seems like there are some good players and some awful players. I do not think there is a single hockey person who would put any of those Oiler dmen in the top 60 dmen in the league.
