When I was about 10 years old, I remember being at the lobby of the Jasper Park Lodge with my parents when my dad spotted James Garner - he went up to him and shook his hand and said to him how much he liked him as an actor. I remember James saying to my dad "well thank you sir I really appreciate that" and they shook hands. Also with James was one of the other actors from Rockford Files, Noah Beery Jr. My dad said to me this morning he still remembers that.
Loved him in The Great Escape and of course Maverick. Interesting to read that he was wounded twice in the Korean War, and received two Purple Hearts for his actions. RIP
This makes me sad. He always reminded me of my grandfather. They looked a lot alike when they were younger. RIP

Damn.
A fantastic actor, probably one of my favorite of all time just due to his TV work...in the early and mid 90's The Rockford Files was probably my favorite show since it was on A&E right when coming home from school.
A great show with lots of good actors, but made by Garner with his authentic-ness and character. He did most of his stunts in the show (which gave him injuries and spats with Universal as a result) and all his driving ones. I loved the various versions of the Firebird Espirt...74 and then 1977 in that great shade or brown.
Here's a great small compilation of the car stuff...the now famous "Rockford" from 33-48 seconds.
We share the same birthdate, and on a trip to LA last year, we went down to where the Rockford Files were filmed in Malibu.
Loved the Rockford files, who of us has not once rented a car and thought about doing a few "Rockford power turns"..........and his work alongside a powerful cast in the epic "the great escape" was fantastic.
He really seemed like the kind of guy you could walk up to and chat with -sort of as mentioned above....
