Default Concussion lawsuits come to the CFL

http://theconcussionblog.com/2014/07...r-concussions/

Is anyone shocked that it's Arland Bruce III?

While there is undoubtedly a fair level of merit to such lawsuits in general, I am always put off by the fact that these claims try to pass the players themselves off as innocent little fools who have no ability to think for themselves and were rushed out there by evil, heartless coaches. It is a decidedly unpersuasive argument for an incident that allegedly occurred in 2012, well after questions about coming back from concussions were widely known. It's also unlikely that Bruce himself was unwilling to play; it is well known that athletes will hide their own injuries or attempt to minimize their severity when talking to coaches and officials specifically because they want to get back in.

I think the power-dynamics between players and coaches, as well as the role that hyped-up notions of masculinity play need to be taken into account. Sure, players might want to get back out there and play, but how much of that has to do with the pressure to conform to this idea of "toughness." I think a lot of these guys are worried that if they come off, they're going to be replaced by guys that don't. In that sense, I do think coaches and management need to take a bit more of a leadership role and remove players when they're clearly hurt.

I think he'll win the civil suit but the awarded judgement will be $0 because the CFL outside of Saskatchewan is broke

Unlike the NFL, does a mass lawsuit like this have the potential to destroy the league? I know the margins are mostly slim for most teams.

Not at all. He's probably bitter at the league since it was probably his anti-gay Micheal Sam tweet this off-season that cost him a fine from the league and clinched the end of his career.
