Columbus extends Dubinsky (6 years, $5.85 AAV)
Columbus has re-signed Brandon Dubinsky to a six year contract kicking in next season.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=456938
No $ figures yet but probably in the 5 million range. Valuable player, good leader, physical player. Would've been a good pick-up on the UFA market next summer.
Update: @Real_ESPNLeBrun 9m
Dubinsky deal's in Columbus: $5.85 M AAV per year and includes no-move, no-trade clauses

I like how Columbus is doing things, they're slowly righting the ship and becoming a "less bad" team. I think this is actually a good move, I think they just need to find a star with that wow factor to help them out a little more.

That is a LOT for Brandon Dubinsky. I like the player, though.

I really like Dubinsky but that is a little expensive and a little long.
Like the Callahan contract you are paying for intangibles.
Glencross has to be happy though because IMO those are two pretty good comparables as UFAs.

The main problem is the NMC/NTC.

This is a little much but I guess they see him as part of their future.
I don't think Glencross is a comparable at all, I don't think he has leadership qualities that both Dubinsky and Callahan have. He may be the same sort of player and I think these deals will actually increase his trade value as players who play that same style seem to be more and more valuable to teams.

Matt Stajan @ 3.125M >>>> Dubinsky @ 5.85M.
This makes the Stajan contract look really good.
This deal is almost Bobby Holik bad.

He has scored 20 goals only twice in his career and his career high is 24.
If Backlund scores 20 this year after 18 last year, does that make him a $5M+ player?

This deal is not even on the same planet as the Holik deal.
It's no discount, probably a million too high, but I'd take Dubinsky on the Flames with this deal.

Dubinsky had 234 hits this year and won 53% of his face offs.
Columbus is a playoff team and Dubinsky was their #1 forward.
This contract makes 3/4 centre Stajan look like a huge over payment.

well when the league's best forwards garner 10.5 million a year, i suppose the second tier of forwards now fall into the 8-10 million range, and your 3rd tier of forwards are in that 5-8 million.

No but if Bouma plays a bit more physical and pots 20 goals and 40-50 pts and is a key player on a playoff team for 5 out of the next 6 years then he would be looking at that kind of contract.
Bouma is the only Flames regular to play anywhere close to as hard as Dubinsky.

If he was an oiler, it would be a $6-7M player

Brandon Dubisnky is a much better hockey player than Matt Stajan. Plays hard minutes, plays all roles, and does them successfully.
Sure, Stajan gets hard match-ups, but he gets absolutely buried in them. Meanwhile, Dubinsky is battling Sidney Crosby successfully.
This is just the norm now. We have to come to grips with it. Good, effective centres get PAID. They're so hard to acquire, that they have to be retained when you do have them.
...the awesome thing about this is we have organizational depth at centre. Finally.

Pretty much. If Backlund repeats, or improves, he'll land himself a $4M+ contract. Anything less will be a HUGE hometown discount. In the next few years we're going to see all 1st line centres making in excess of 9M with elite centres making 10M+, 2nd line centres will be making 5-7M and 3rd line centres will bring home 4-5M. The Toews deal is the new benchmark, not the Crosby or Malkin deals.

They do? Did Johansen decide he didn't want to play hockey anymore?
