Flames interview Reto Schürch for goalie coach position
http://swisshockeynews.ch/index.php/...calgary-flames
Quote:
NLA - As newspaper Le Matin reports, the Calgary Flames are interested in bringing Rapperswil-Jona Lakers' goaltender coach Reto Schürch over to Calgary for the next season.
|
Quote:
The 39-year-old former goaltender confirmed in an interview with Le Matin that there have indeed been discussions with the Flames and that he had spoken to head coach Bob Hartley last week: "A contract has not been signed yet, but the conversation with Hartley went well."
The interest in Schürch has a specific reason: Newly signed goaltender Jonas Hiller apparently wants to have Schürch as his goalie coach for the upcoming season and as designated number one of the Calgary Flames, he might just get what he asks for.

Welp. Perhaps this is the news that was coming soon as reported from the sketchy Kipper Twitter account / Roger Millions re-posting.

Hiller designated #1? Did I miss something? I would think Ramo would have something to say about that. I see them more as a 1a/b combo this year.

If he helps Hiller return to form this could be a great move

I'm not sure about this.
From my understanding, it seems as though making the jump from Europe to NA for goalies is especially difficult because of different angles and such. How will a European goalie coach help if he doesn't fully understand the way to play on NHL ice?

And what does it say to Ramo if they hire a goalie coach hand-picked by the new guy?

I assumed at first that this might be due to a connection with Hartley from his Swiss league days, the Hiller thing didn't enter my mind.

Rumors are the Flames are being turned down by a few of their top choices.
Jimmy Waite turned down the the Flames for the Blackhawks and Marcoux turned down the Flames for the Canes.

I agree with what you are thinking but I'm sure most people outside of the Flames feel that our goalie salaries show which goalie is considered the #1.
So let's all now laugh at their ignorant capgeek sourced reporting.

Come on, it's not just salaries.
Hiller has played over 300 NHL games and has more than 160 Ws
Ramo has 88 games and 26 Ws
I don't think anyone, other than Flames fans, would consider Ramo the #1 over Hiller

The new regime most likely doesn't think Ramo has what it takes. He is a Feaster/Weisbrod project and will probably be back in the KHL next season. Teams don't sign a guy like Hiller to be a 1a or a 1b, he is the starter and Ramo is a good enough, albeit expensive backup
If they signed a guy like Greiss, or Lindback etc then there would be a battle in net

That would be cool. How are Miikka's communication skills though? It's a big part of being a coach.

Why did we can Marcoux in the first place?
Was Malarchuk supposed to stay for a while then the Flames changed their minds on him?

Finnish media reported Kipper is going to be goalie coach for national youth teams in Finland this year. It's highly unlikely he'll be working in any capacity for Calgary.

That would be my concern as well. He seems pretty quiet.
But he is getting some coaching experience (not sure if this was ever posted):

It says to him that he better learn as much as he can from the guy because there is a competition for playing time. Nothing wrong with that. If Ramo's a pro, he'll take it like one.

I think if each plays like they did last year, Ramo could end up being the #1 goalie (or at the very least, a 1A or 1B goalie).
Hiller has more experience and a bigger cheque, but Ramo will be challenging him for the #1 spot.
