MAx Shreck was considered the ultimate method actor of his time. He would only shoot at night, he lived in a basement out of sunlight during the day, and would only eat very undercooked meat while they were shooting the movie. combined with his gaunt appearance, and the fact that he was so into his role made people conclude that he was the real deal.

A lot of the beliefs that he was a vampire came from both a slick promotional campaign by the film makers, and his apperance in the film
IMDB refers to him as the Gary Oldman of his time for his willingness to take on strange roles
