Possible Backlund and Brodie extension numbers?
The Flames are free to sign Brodie and Backlund to contract extensions at any time. I believe these are important contracts for the Flames as it will set the tone for future contracts offers to Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, etc. What will it take to get it done?
After the 2014-15 season it appears Backlund would be 1 year away from being a UFA and Brodie would be 2 years away.
During the last 2 seasons we have seen both players progress into better players and I am going to be optimistic and assume that will continue to improve.
I would be fine with the following extensions:
Backlund - 5 years 20 million total (4m AAV)
Brodie - 6 years 30 million total (5m AAV)
Maybe paying Backlund 4 million per season is a bit high since he looks like he will eventually slot in as the 3rd line center, but I think he's worth it.

A 5 year, $20 mil contract for Backlund? On one hand that's insane, on the other hand that WhereRUChrisOsullivan dude would spontaneously combust. SO hopefully he gets that contract.

Those contracts are insane haha. A bit to high but they should be extended middle of the season.

I think what you have wrong in your estimates is that both of those players will likely get either their term or cap hit beefed up a bit, but you beefed up both.
I fully realize that I could be way off, so I don't mean that in a condescending way, but I'm thinking something more along the lines of either...
MB - 3 years, 3.5mil
TJ - 3 years, 4mil
or
MB - 4 years, 3mil
TJ - 4 years, 3.5mil
I don't think you're going see these guys signing 20 and 30 mil contracts at this point in their careers, seems crazy to me.

I think you'll see Treliving keep his word on 3 year deals, with a higher average.

Sounds about right for Backlund if he repeats the last year and has a 20 goal season.
Brodie has not done enough to warrant an extra 10 million for 1 season. 5 mil a year seems too high to me although I guess you are buying quite a few years of his UFA status. Still wouldn't want to go more than 4/4.5 tops - he has demonstrated good ability in the NHL but not great. I think he's been a very good player but is a bit overrated by Flames fans (ducks), nowhere near upper echelon.
Then again when defencemen like Nikita Nikitin and Derek Engelland get those kind of salaries and the cap has gone up, maybe he will get that kind of money.

Stajan received a $3.15 million contract, which I think is fair, and I would rate Backlund higher than Stajan.
I do feel they have to wait to see how Backlund's progresses in the first half of next season before offering an extension.

Those were for UFAs. These guys are core guys, I'd rather go longer in term and lower the cap hit.
The higher average now will make them more expensive on a shorter term when we're ready to compete.

3 years makes sense when signing UFAs during your rebuild. I don't think he would restrict all contracts to 3 years or less especially when you are looking to retain soon to be UFAs.

We would be lucky to get Brodie below 5.5.
I figure Backlund comes in somewhere around 3.5.

Depends on how well they play this year.
I'd give both a 4 x 4.

Paying Brodie 5.5 or more at this point seems insane.

After Engellands contract Brodie is going to be looking for at least 4 and I think Backlunds contract will end up being a direct relation to how he performs in relation to Stajan

If Engelland is a measuring stick PK Subban is going to want 15 million.

Brodie and Backlund will RFA's at the end of their current contracts. They won't be measured against guys who signed UFA contracts.

He was part of one of the best defensive pairings in the league last season. His advanced stats are fantastic.
