I was going to wait for Vrbata, Niskanen and Grabovski to drop before making this but maybe if they turn out to be epically bad they can be added later.
So, who made the dumbest signing today? Here are the strongest candidates:
Dave Bolland - 5 years, 5.5M AAV
Brooks Orpik - 5 years, 5.5M AAV
Benoit Pouliot - 5 years, 4M AAV
Derek Engelland - 3 years, 2.9M AAV
Matt Niskanen - 7 years, 5.75M AAV
Clayton Stoner - 4 years, 3.25M AAV
Cast your votes!
(Incidentally there's no point in a "best" thread because it's Ehrhoff)

Definitely Orpik, without a doubt. Pouliot is runner-up. I doubt either player is still with their respective team by the time the five years deals commence.
Also I would probably put Hiller's deal right up there with Ehrhoff's, but that's just me.
No, it's legitimately a terrible contract and anyone not wearing homer glasses can see that.
If you needed a hint, it was when everyone assumed that the 2.9 million was the total for 3 years not the AAV.
The only reason it's not as bad as the others is because it doesn't go on as long.
Anyway, I'll vote Orpik, with Bolland as runner up.
Its overpayment, but why is it bad, and who for? Even if we were making the floor without the contract, we aren't going to be anywhere near the cap limit in 12/24 months time, so I fail to see why its a terrible deal from the Flames perspective.
Engelland is a bit overpaid but 2.9 mil is not a huge deal, especially for only 3 years. This is not a deal the Flames are going to be choked about in a few years. They needed a depth defenceman who is a right shot and tough to play against. Checked every box, had lots of cap room. Would rather have seen him for 1.5ish but it is free agency day, the bad deals are the long ones where guys got term and high value.
2.9x3 is a pretty minor commitment in relative terms.
