Default How well do you know Religion?

Apparently us Athiests know the most in general about various faiths

http://www.pewforum.org/2010/09/28/u...bout-religion/

Taking their little quiz I managed 13/15. Screwed one up by confusing a couple of names and I know nothing about the First Great Awakening so those docked me

I scored 15/15 but guessed on the First Great Awakening (even though I am familiar with revivalist movements).

I think that Atheists that come from a religious background may generally have a greater knowledge of other faiths because they had an upbringing in religion and it's theology/lore/tenets/practices and would have logically sought out understanding of other religions in order to frame their own while developing their own scepticism.

In my experience, it's the more militant atheists with no religious background that actually are more ignorant of religion and simply expound that it is the universal casus bellum, source of hate, suffering etc. without knowledge/comprehension of the theology and history of various religions.

I wish that this survey had involved a slightly deeper exploration of what atheism is in that context as I wouldn't be surprised if many are actually apostates, especially those who professed agnosticism.

I had absolutely no religious upbringing, my parents never once talked about god to me or my brother and the only time I've ever stepped inside a church was for a wedding. But I enjoy learning about the historical aspects of different religions, and the more I learn the more convinced I am about my own positions

7/15... Frankly I'm surprised I did that well at all.

As for the Atheist thing as far as I'm concerned you're welcome to believe whatever you want to believe but please don't throw it in my face.

In that case, I think you just belong to the nerdist or wikipedian religions.

I thought Vatican 2 redefined the transubstantiation to be metaphorical rather than literal? That was the only question to screw me up. Any hardcore Catha-holics that know Vatican 2 that can confirm or deny?

14/15. Not bad for an atheist. Didn't know the Jewish Sabbath.

10/15. And here's the kicker. I'm Catholic and I got a Catholic question wrong.

I got 12/15 but I think this quiz is a little misleading. Why would a deeply religious catholic know about vishnu and shiva any more than the average person? There are a couple other questions like that too. Just general trivia questions.

13/15. Missed the sacrament question and prayer in school.

Well the poll was "Who Knows What About Religion", not "Who Knows What About A Religion".

In theory a deeply religious anything should know more about other religions than the average or non-religious person, presumably because they've evaluated all the options equally in order to come to their decision as to which religion to adhere to.

EDIT: 15/15, but I may have taken that before.

I got 12/15, had to guess on a few. The two school questions I got wrong and the last question. I don't think the school questions demonstrate any knowledge at all if you are Canadian. I am Jewish and atheist.

15/15, although admittedly I guessed on the Great Awakening one. I consider myself to be pretty religious, although in reality I'm probably more moderate than a lot of people.

9/15 - was brought up catholic, though I consider myself a Agnostic now, so I was able to hit all those and knew a few of the others. Although this did show me how little I know outside of the religion I was brought up in.

Luckily got 14/15, I guessed on the last one and the 2 public school questions. I went to a Catholic school so I had no idea really on those 2

I'm not religious at all but I enjoy learning, I've read a lot about most religions so it's pretty easy for me. In a Catholic school we learned quite a bit about other religions too

I would have thought this test would correlate pretty highly with education levels, regardless of religion. It's all trivia really, and the more educated you happen to be, the more likely you are to have been exposed to this information.

I would also imagine that as education increases, so does identification as atheist or agnostic, accounting for their high scores (which might seem contradictory). But maybe I'm biased there.

12/15. Also raised Catholic, missed a Catholic question. And re-reading the answer I forgot how absurd Catholicism is...

And thanks to Simpsons for teaching me everything I know about Hinduism.
