Default The Very Best of 4th pick overall in NHL History.

The Very Best of 4th pick overall in NHL History.

Interesting. Ryan Leslie was talking about the very best 4th pick overall in the NHL history. I hope history repeats itself.

https://twitter.com/nhlflames/status/481485750169391104

Here are the Top 4 :

1. Steve Yzerman :1983 Detroit. Players picked ahead of him are : Brian Lawton, Sylvain Turgeon and Pat Lafontaine.

2. Ron Francis : 1981 Hartford. Players picked ahead are Dale Hawerchuk, Doug Smith and Bobby Carpenter.

3. Larry Murphy : 1980 Los Angeles. Ahead are Doug Wickenheiser, David Babych and Denis Savard.

4. Mike Gartner : 1979 Washington. Picked ahead are Rob Ramage, Perry Turnbull and Mike Foligno.

Last year Seth Jones went down to 4th and picked by Nashville. Other notables are Andrew Ladd, Alex Pietrangelo and Evander Kane.

I know those Top 4 are in the 80's but I am hoping we can steal some magic from the early 80s 4th pick overall and our pick become successful or close to as those guys.

Thanks to this, anyone less good than Steve Yzerman and I will be angry.

Whoever the Flames get at 4th with the pick will most likely be better than Yakupov, so there's that.

Why? Because he was a Hitmen? He sucked. Total bust.

Only 11 career goals in 78 career games.

Here are the last 10 years of 4th overall pick:

2004 - Andrew Ladd
2005 - Benoit Pouliot
2006 - Nicklas Backstrom
2007 - Thomas Hickey
2008 - Alex Pietrangelo
2009 - Evander Kane
2010 - Ryan Johansen
2011 - Adam Larsson
2012 - Griffin Reinhart
2013 - Seth Jones

2/10 of the picks are not impact players (Pouliot and Hickey) but still play full-time.
1/10 hasn't played in the NHL (Griffin Reinhart) but is projecting to be an impact player.
The remaining 7 are impact players and some are franchise players.

So picking Ritchie might not be the greatest idea?

Don't worry they aren't picking Ritchie. Treliving isn't going to make a pick like that as his first move. Draisatl all day every day, nearly guaranteed

Potentially signature-worthy there!

I think we'll have one of the Sam's, I can't see Edmonton passing up on Draisaitl.

5/10 are defencemen, including the latest 3 selections. Fingers crossed for another one!

I would be happy with a player on the level of any of those of the last six years. And really, 8 out of 10 of those I'd be happy with.
