To preserve the integrity of this request for funding, they should provide disclosure about how the money is spent. LeVar Burton makes this look like a near philanthropic effort. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.
Look at the size of their team. Payroll is more than the kickstarter amount over a few months. All of those people need to pay mortgages or rent, eat, etc. etc. so that's OK, but be real with the people donating money. You're doing it to make more money. That's fine but make it clear.
I take no issue with them raising money for a great project. But $1,000,000 for something of this magnitude? All this really is asking for money to finance them making more money off the finished product.
I'm not saying its bad, but the whole kickstarter ecosphere, or whatever you call it, to me is looking increasingly shady. Too many instances of people being taken advantage of, and as far as I can tell, kickstarter only cares about their cut.

Many people in their 20's and 30's owe significant gratitude to Levar and Reading Rainbow for learning how to read and becoming interested in books. For the amount that show has impacted our generation, it's nice to see us stepping up and continuing the legacy and the importance that RR brings to kids.
I get almost teary-eyed when I hear that theme song. Every time.
Super cool, Reading Rainbow was always a good watch.

I kind of agree with you on this. I realize it will cost money to maintain and develop, but does it really address what it is going to set out to do?
Is the parent of an illiterate child going to buy the monthly subscription? What exactly is a disadvantaged classroom and how will that be evaluated? Do you have partnerships will school boards that will pay for licenses or will teachers be asked to pay for it out of their own pockets (which occurs all too often if they want resources outside of what the school provides).
