Default 2014 NHL draft: After the first round.

The conversation was brought up in the prospects thread and thought it was a good idea.

I think we've all beaten the first round to death, at least the top part of it and it's fair to see what people are thinking of when it comes to the two 2nd round picks and the two 3rd round picks.

I'm hoping there will be a little bit of a Russian factor involved when it comes to Calgary's first 2nd rounder and that Nikolai Goldobin slips to the Flames.

Outside of that I feel with the 35th pick there's some decent players to be had: (note, I am listing personal preferences as everyone else will have theirs. And I am using the top 150 prospects list from THN.)

Calgary's pick:

Center Ryan MacInnis. Ranked anywhere from the mid first to the mid second round. A center with size, a great shot and a nose for the net. #2s son could be a nice find if developed properly.

LW Brendan Lemieux. Claudes son. In the prospects game he was just as pesky as his dad was. Scored a goal or two IIRC as well. Good size and can skate.

Center Connor Bleakley. Right handed, good size and has some good hands.

Defenseman Joshua Jacobs. 6'2" RH D man from the US development program. Probably a likely pick with Burkie at the helm. Skates well, shoots well, needs to find some consistency.

Defenseman Jack Glover. 6'3 Almost identical to Jacobs except I'n not reading about any consistency issues.

Colorado's Pick:

Just going to list names here.

Center Vladislav Kamenev.

LW/RW Vladimir Tkachyov

Defenseman Adam Ollas Mattsson

LW/RW Oskar Lindblom

Calgary's 3rd:

Can probably lump in some of the names from the COL pick as they'll probably be close together anyways.

Defenseman Ryan Mantha . Another big Right Handed american D-man? keep them coming and hope one sticks I guess.

LW Spencer Watson. Bennetts line mate. why not at this point.

I think there's some steals to be had in the later rounds.

Ben Thomas or Travis Sanheim are probably worth a look with one of the thirds. Both are Hitmen, made the Canada U-18 team, and apparently have good skill sets

It's way too hard to predict who will be available when the Flames picks come around after the 1st - far too much disparity in team lists.

After picking a high end forward with the 4th overall, I'd like to see us getting some D men this year in the later rounds.

I think Bleakley could be a decent find.

Led his junior team in scoring, was almost a PPG, and didn't play on a very high powered offense.

Edit: Actually sounds like he is bigger than the 5'11" hockeydb has him listed at.

I'd be very happy with Ryan MacInnis in the 2nd round. I think he has some untapped offensive potential.

Jack Glover I think fits the bill perfectly. Look him up.

Brendan Lemieux intrigues me. His father was the epitome of a playoff performer.

Pick up some RW and D in this draft in the later rounds.

Eric Cornel would be nice.

Assuming that Ekblad doesn't magically fall into our laps at 4th this year, I'll take a forward with our top 5 pick and draft defenceman in the 2nds, big forwards/goalies in 3rd, then wheel of fortune the rest:

Flame's 2nd (34th overall) - Jack Dougherty
Two-Way Defenceman:
-Good triggerman/QB on the PP
-Smart in own zone
-6'1 185lbs and still needs to bulk up plenty
-Excellent skating, plays physical

Colorado's 2nd (58th overall) - Ben Thomas
Two-Way Defenceman:
-Right handed shot
-Plays with high compete level
-Big & strong (6'1 190 with some filling out to do), physical play in corners
-Good puck handling skills

Calgary's 3rd (64th overall) - Hunter Smith
Power Forward (RW)
-Kanzig sized (6'6 210)
-Can throw down with the best of them
-Improving in leaps and bounds
-Good board battler and tough to knock off puck
-Starting to find the back of the net a lot lately

Pittsburgh's 3rd (85th overall) - Keegan Iverson
Power Forward (RW)
-Big(6'1 210) and tough and agitative
-Very in-your-face
-Heavy shot & quick release but needs work on accuracy and passing
-Passionate and team-oriented, sticks up for teammates

Anaheim's 6th (178th overall) - Nolan Stevens (son of Scott Stevens)
Two-way Centerman
-Gaudreau's IQ/stickhandling
-Bouma's fearlessness

Flames' 7th (184th overall) - Devin Williams
Butterfly Goalie
-Good under pressure (except McDavid's on his team so)
-Good numbers in 2014 OHL playoffs so far (8-0-1, .934 SV%,1.88 GAA)

Matched you on the 64th pick. And I went with the Finnish goalie at 85. Agreed with the Stevens pick but I took him 6 picks later. And with the 34th pick Dougherty and Glover were close but I'm leaning with Glover.

I thought Nolan Stevens was the son of John Stevens. The L.A assistant coach.

I have the tendency to make stupid mistakes regarding facts on long posts like this

It's all good. I would just assume that being Scot Stevens son would vault him into the third or second round. Only because there would be an off chance Father taught son how to hit haha.

Justin Kirkland from Kelowna is going to be a great pickup for somebody, he scored at a much higher rate in the 2nd half of the season and is flying under the radar because of his first half numbers, has just recently started to fill out his 6'3 frame, too bad he is a left wing from the flames perspective though. I think he will end up being an NHL player, once he fills out he is gonna be big.

Feel like Calgary really missed the boat on the last/current crop of rockets, Severson, Bowey, Wheaton, Sissons all went outside the first round, especially Bowey and Severson are blue chippers now. Not often the best players on the top ranked junior team in canada all were picked outside the first. /end homer scouting

Wheaton was a player I was looking at last year while going through the big lists. Detroit picked him up I think.

Would like Anton Karlsson with our 2nd but believe we will go D with this pick (McKeown, Brycen Martin and Swedish D at this ranking and should be available ). Ben Thomas and/or Alex Peters with Colorado 2nd or our 3rd please.
