Default Tell me about composters

We bought a house with a big backyard so thought I would start composting. I need a composter, but have no clue what I should get. Do I need a tumbling one? How big?

Any suggestions?

I'd get a tumbling one if I were you. I saw one at Costco last weekend.

I got the $25 one from the city. It is worthless.

Once the city forces those green bins, I'm tossing it into my blue bin.

How handy are you? Seriously, just set aside a patch of ground and you have done it. Mix in a bit of soil and it won't t smell bad.

The city ones are a nuisance. They come apart when you try to stir the contents.

Watch out for wasps / bees / vermin.

I made one by taking 4 pallets and ratchet strapping them together into a cube shape. After 2 years I now have a cubic yard of compost.

I've done composting a million different ways. The easiest I find is to have one big bin that you throw stuff into and forget. Then once or twice a year shovel out the black stuff that no longer looks like food into a black plastic with hole drilled into it. The finishing bin will be completed the following year. Its neat and easy. Mix when you feel like it.

The tumbling one. Most popular one we sell at Lowe's.
