A lot of players have come and gone but this is different. Peter's been the voice of the Flames since the very beginning and I feel this is a much more significant loss to a long time fan such as myself than any single player. For the first time ever things will never be the same for Flames fans.

Great piece Bingo, and damn you for this little dust in one eye. The term legend gets thrown around a little too much these days if you ask me. In my opinion it should be reserved for days like today when a real one deserves recognition.

Thanks for all of the memories Peter!

Being close to the same age as you I have many of the same memories. I recall listening to Peter calling numerous games while I was taking shots on a ragged street hockey net in my parents basement, then being chased to bed and listening to him call the rest of the game on my clock radio under my sheets hoping my parents couldnt hear it.

Peter Maher was Calgary to me, this one hurts.

Beautiful!
Would that I had the eloquence of a Bingo, nevermind a Maher, and I could say this better.
That's the one thing that those of us who were around in the 80's.... Peter Maher was our major source of information - our actual lifeline to the Calgary Flames. And like Walter Cronkite and a few others, Peter Maher was a voice you could trust.

I think the differences in Flames/Oilers organizations were typified even by the difference in their broadcasters:
Rod Phillips is a legitimate hall-of-famer, and the biggest homer I may have ever heard. I remember one game where Buchberger was in a fight, and the way Rod described it he layed the pounding of his life on the other guy.... which was unusual because to my knowledge Bucky had never won a fight. Sure enough, on watching the highlights Bucky took his usual beating, without landing a punch.
Peter Maher was not that way. You knew if he said, it happened just that way. Hell, you could see it happen that way.

Thank you Peter - and thanks Bingo for perfectly summing it up for those of us who probably have spent more time listening to Peter Maher than almost any other human being.

Cheers

A great piece Bingo, but unfortunately a little inaccurate. Peter Maher did not broadcast every game. I believe that the Calgary Flames original radio broadcaster was Bart Dailley.

Maybe I was too young and making this up but didn't John Henderson do some pbp and Maher do "Hockey Talk" for the old CHQR? Maybe year 2.

I just seem to recall Maher doing some open phone lines in that shooting gallery that was "Hockey Talk".

Beautifully done DM. And I echo evey single thing you say...this day has been WAY harder than it should be, but it also is a day of celebration of a man who deserves everything good coming his way.

The word legend is used a lot in sports, but Peter Maher truly fits the description as well as anyone ever associated with Flames hockey.

It feels like losing a family member in a weird way, but let's hope he makes the odd appearance on 960 through the years and lavishes us with his eloquence and professionalism that only he can bring to an AM station.

A fitting recollection D'Arcy of a world class man and timeless voice that brought so many fantastic memories to all Flames fans.
Really well written.
