It was on CBC'S CHEX TV. I think it's covered by most carriers in the country, so if it was available tonight or not is up to the carrier. CBC made it available on TV. That being said, I do think putting a game on TAN in such a situation would be the optimal solution.

At least this Habs vs. Bolts game isn't a dud. It's pretty exciting too. I think Friedman tweeted that's the only broadcasting conflict of the playoffs for CBC for these 2 series.
@FriedgeHNIC: Tonight is the only conflict for MON/TB and CLB/PIT, thankfully

Shaw doesn't provide CBC CHEX, at least not in Western Canada. At the very least CBC should get a PPV channel for these situations. They already use a PPV channel for the Punjabi broadcast so they could easily put the other game on a different PPV channel.

That's weird, I got the game with Shaw in Ontario. I would lay the blame with Shaw more than the CBC for this situation for not carrying the channel.

Yeah, it is partially Shaw's problem. On their support forum they state that CHEX is a small market CBC broadcast in Ontario which they don't offer nationally.
I have the same complaint regarding HNIC and their two early game conflicts. I hate having the Leafs game shown in Western Canada and 99% of the time I would watch the Sens or Habs if the game was available on another channel. Maybe HNIC will be different in the future with Rogers taking over.

Telus doesn't carry it in their regular package either. I wanted to find Danny and punch him in the throat.... and then call Telus and voice my displeasure

Well...won't have to worry about this going forward with Rogers but you'll likely be ticked when you have to add some giant cable package to get sportsnet one if they stick games on that channel.

CBC's Playoff Coverage
Not too sure why Chex was used here either. It's a tiny little channel out of Peterborough. I guess they figured people would flip if they put it on the news channel.
And even though there are no more conflicts between these series, you've still got conflicts between CBJ-PIT and CHI-STL later on (although the CHI-STL games do start a bit later so you'll probably be able to catch the end of those games if there's no ot)

If you had Bell, you could watch the Habs or Sens on Saturdays, no problem. People need to start blaming their providers instead of CBC.

In HD?
And just wait until games are on FX Canada...then we will see just how great Bell is.

Yes.
edit: I get the Montreal and Ottawa CBC channels in HD and most of the CBC stations across Canada. I'm on an old programming system though and the newer programming choices may not give as much flexibility or may charge extra.

Chex is my local hd cbc channel so I had the misfortune of having to watch the Montreal game in eye stabbing sd.
Still better than any sportsnet broadcast I saw this year.

On Monday, April 21, CHEX will be showing game three of the Blues at Blackhawks game in its entirety starting at 1830h, 6:30 pm Mountain time. This is because game three of the Penguins at BJs game will be on the full CBC network starting ninety minutes earlier.
There will be conflicts with other games in the first round of the playoffs for HNIC.

The other silly thing about CBC is their online feed is flash based killing it for most tablet users. Most of us would have propped up our tablet on our "washboard ab" while we watched the Montreal game on TV.

Massive difference in the quality of the HD between CBC and tsn tonight.
I guess there's no point complaining because of the new deal.

They can't put the game on the news channel. CBC News Network isn't licensed for live sports, and they've already gotten into trouble with the CRTC for that in the past.
Putting it on CHEX was borderline ######ed though. There is no reason at all to expect that very many people in the country would get the local channel out of Peterborough. This was CBC thinking about Toronto only, and damned be the rest of the country.
Meanwhile, TSN had soccer replays on both channels when they could have broadcast the game. For all the problems Sportsnet will have, at least conflicts like the ones CBC set up won't be one of them.
