[Discussion] If a Lottery Win: Pick First or Trade for 2nd, or 3rd Pick + ?
Pretty self explanatory. Would you want the Flames to take the first overall? Or would you welcome trading the first overall for the 2nd, or 3rd + extra picks and/or assets?
1st Overall = possible choice of
- Ekblad, Reinhart, or Bennett
2nd Overall = possible choice of either
- Ekblad, Reinhart

3rd Overall = possible choice (1 out of 3) of

Depends on who wanted the pick and what they wanted.
If they wanted Sam Reinhart first overall, I wouldn't do it.

I agree, you see who everyone else wants and what they would be willing to give to move up. We would hold all of the cards because we cannot lose. If there is a good offer to move down and we can still get the player you want you make the move, otherwise stand pat and you still get the player you want.

Keep the pick and trust in your scouts to pick the BPA.

With Burke, he is picking Ekblad, and I am not opposed to that.
Bennett or Reinhart would be awesome too...
If you intend to trade down, only trade down to Buffalo and Florida, not any lower.

Not ideal taking a dman 1st overall especially one that might not even pan out to be a coffee stone #1 guy.
If you can trade down and still get him or Bennett it would be great.
I just don't see any team vein desperate enough to offer a big package to move into the #1 slot. 1-5 all should get a really good player.

This makes no sense.
Burke "who do you guys want?"
Murray (Sabres GM) "we totally want that Reinhart kid"
Burke "sweet, yeah we like Ekblad... Wanna trade?"
Murray "lol no"
Burke "ok"
Murray "why don't you ask the Oilers, the might do something dumb"
Burke "Haha yeah... Stupid Oilers"
What I'm saying is, if both GMs like different players then why would they trade? If they like the same guy, why would Burke make the trade?

What you are really saying is would you trade down with Buffalo, and no one else. Why would Buffalo trade up?

If you win the lottery, you'd be foolish to trade down. How do you know the other team will take the guy they say they will.

Only reason Buffalo would trade up is if they think another team is about to trade up with the Flames and take their player.

If we win the lottery, I'd want Ekblad just to sweep him away from the Oilers.
Seriously though, let's say Buffalo wins the lottery resulting in the draft order staying the same. What kind of asset would we have to give up in order to trade with either Buffalo or Florida for the #1 or #2 pick?
Buffalo to me is interesting, because the Isles have to give up their 1st rounder either this year or next. If they choose to do so this year, BUF would have #1 as well as #5. I wonder if they could be persuaded to take our pick.

You would pretend you liked the same guy in order to gain assets..

The scenario like Table5 suggest is perfect example.
You know Florida covets Ekblad. You decide to leave him on the table to gain assets. You trade your 1st overall for their 3rd overall, their 2nd round pick 2014, their 2nd round pick 2015.
They draft Ekblad 1st ov, Flames takes which Sam is left at 3rd ov, and gets the pair of 2nd round picks

Many people are saying that there isn't a massive difference in the BPA for the top 4 or 5 players this year, if that is true (and assuming most NHL teams, and especially the Flames, see it that way) I don't see why we wouldn't just keep our pick and let the chips fall where they may.
Burke already said that he doesn't believe in drafting for position, so I can't see that being a factor.
Edit: Never mind, I misunderstood the OP. Yes, I would trade down this year as long as we stayed in the top 4 or 5. Some teams are likely still drafting for position. As always, it of course depends on the return.

Why would you trade the pick? When is the next time this organization will be able to go into a draft having their choice of any prospect? This trade down stuff rarely ever happens and is nothing more than draft hype. I would be willing to bet that Burke happily holds on to the pick in this scenario.
