I agree. He plays big. Plays hard. Fights for every inch of ice, and minute of ice time. He is truculence personified.

However I feel Burke will do the smart thing of assigning him to the Heat at first to take a proper look at him there and see how it might translate to the NHL level, and this will also help to temper fan expectations of him. If he makes the Flames immediately that would put a lot more pressure on his shoulders than if he's eased in bit by bit.
-Byron is good enough to play in any combination and not look outta place so I'd favor him much more over the AHL'ers or someone like Galiardi. Had some nice moves last night that probably got inspired from watching Johnny Hockey highlights. I think he'll have a roster spot on the big club at the start of the season; it'll set a great example of "Small but play big, you get to stay" by Burke & Hartley.

This is pretty much what I'm thinking too. He does play bigger than his size and has great wheels and vision.

I love Byron. With Cammy likely gone next year, it would not shock me to see Byron hit 20-30-50 in a top-6 role.

How is Burke going to make the team bigger with Byron, Hudler, Gaudreau, Baertschi, and possibly keeping Cammy?
Johnny and maybe Sven could be on the Heat most of the year. Maybe they trade Hudler but he seems like such a good guy in the room and the same with Cammy. I don't know where there is room for Byron but I hope Burke finds a way because Byron is a fun player to watch and root for

It's not like all of them are going to take spots on the big club immediately.
Baertschi will likely make the club right off but Cammy is gone, Gaudreau is likely in the AHL to start, Hudler will start next year but might be traded, Byron makes the team and is likely 3rd/4th line scoring depth who can move up if needed.
Realistically Baerts and Gaudreau will be our 1st and 2nd line LW going into the future - just not immediately. There wasn't really a time where I questioned this.

They will give him a one way deal with 2 year term max.
If Cammi resigns I think hudler is traded. I also think Johnny starts the year in the AHL.
I read comments from heat coach ward yesterday and I think Sven will be back on the heat next year. He said something to the effect that he needs to grow up on the day to day things off the ice. He also said while his defensive game has gotten better, it's got a ways to go (paraphrasing).

I think he gets a new 2-year deal. He gets more ice-time next year (because he will have earned it) and he continues to grow as a player.
Then, when Baertschi and/or Gaudreau are deserving of increased ice-time, Byron is moved for a decent return.
That's my prediction.

I agree that he'll sign. He's a player.. no reason to give up an asset for no reason. He's probably earned a one way deal.
He's good on the PK... can slot in anywhere in the lineup.
I do agree with some the above that Sven is likely back to the AHL to start the year... I think they want him to force his way in rather than giving it to him.

Hopefully Byron stays. Baertschi and Gaudreau are as yet unproven at the NHL level.

Why does everyone keep saying Hudler is a good guy in the room? I have heard nothing to suggest he isn't for the record, but other than he let Monahan stay with him (which I won't discount) it's not like I hear anything crazy good about his leadership abilities.
In fact the only thing I've heard is earlier this year, I believe it was Duha said something like he'd heard that Hudler had matured some since coming to Calgary, and that his lack of maturity in the past was the reason Detroit were ok with letting him walk and the reason behind his feud with the Czheck national coach (who is clearly an idiot).
Anyway, that's a good thing if he's matured, and again I've heard nothing negative either, but I don't get why people keep saying he seems so good in the room. He's a vet on this squad, he wasn't initially considered for a letter, and when our letter players got injured, the team didn't look to him as next options either. I realize you can lead without a letter, but it does strike me as odd that one of the most veteran guys on this roster and one with a cup has not worn a letter at some point this year with all our injuries to the leadership team.

Yeah, I think we re-sign him and see where the chips fall next September. You can't assume Gaudreau and Baertschi will make it right out of camp, but if they do, at least having Byron signed would give them some trading flexibility.

I think you're putting a bit too much weight on the letter thing. It worked wonders for Backlund but I don't see how owning an A will make a world of difference between what the vets bring to the locker room vs without it. A's just kind of a symbolic thing, that's probably why Glencross still has one.

I doubt that the Flames would have had Monahan live with him if they didn't think he would be a decent mentor. They aren't going to send their prized rookie to live with a guy who's causing troublemaker.

Give him a one year one-way deal. No need to give him more than one year.

I'd do a 2-year, one-way deal. He's a terrific 3rd line winger. No one works harder.

I think you two - Enoch especially - have the most likely predictions. I might even go so far to say he's offered 3 years.
1.) He just had yet another kid, so this would be a classy move from the Flames to give him a sense of home for a few years.
2.) He's 24 now. He will be in his physical prime by the time his contract year rolls around, still likely in RFA territory and downright cheap so we could get a decent asset back.
3.) I'd say 2-3 years is a good estimate on when Johnny and Sven are expected to make the leap to become full-time NHL'ers (among other prospects).
