Default Anybody been to Galveston?

Me, the wife and the youngin (10 months) are heading down to Houston for a cousins wedding at the beginning of May. We are staying at his place on Tiki Island and have a few days to kill after the wedding. With Tiki island being so close to Galveston we thought we might head that way to check things our.

Anybody been there and have any recommendations on things to do/eat/see while we are there? My parents will be down there too so if we need a sitter we have one. Thanks

I was there once for an afternoon about 10 years ago. Took a nice little stroll on the seawall, ate at some seafood place overlooking the water.

Not much more to add, wasn't there too long.

Driving to Galveston from Houston takes you past NASA though, so that's kinda cool.

Moody Gardens is ok. Space Centre was mentioned, Kemah Boardwalk is close to the Space Centre and it is pretty good too.

Skipped Moody Gardens as we weren't sure the cost would have been worth it.

Went to the historic old Moody Mansion and loved it. But it's kinda like a one house version of Heritage Park.

The beach is ok, the town itself is interesting due to the abandonment here and there. But off the top of my head I can't think of much else there is there...

My sister lives in Houston, so when I visit, we usually get down there.
It's nothing amazing, unless it's Mardi Gras season, which you probably would not be interested in based on the whole 10 month old thing.
It's nice to get down there for the beach though.

Thanks for putting this song into my head.

Its been quite a few years since I was there. The only thing that really sticks out in my memory was the amount of dead washed up fish there was on the beach.

Some neat buildings there though too.

I was in Galveston in May 2010, it was kind of neat to check out for a day, but I don't think you'd need any more time than that. While there, we stumbled into a BBQ competition that was well worth seeing. Looks like it's on May 9-10 this year: http://www.ycfund.org/. If you can make it for that, it's definitely worth checking out, even just to see the rigs they have set up and the smell delicious aromas in the air.

NASA is pretty cool, but a lot of it is geared towards kids. The best part for me was the gallery area where they have all the different kinds of spacecraft they've used.

Not much to add... There isn't too much there when I was in town last (5 years ago).

Went there to go surfing for the day. Pretty lousy waves when we were there though still rideable. Lots of jellyfish, was stung about 20- 25 times that day. Be careful when you go out, water is pretty murky.

Honestly, it is a decent place to go if you happen to have nothing else to do in Houston and are craving a beach. Otherwise I would steer clear of it.
