Default Cell Phone Cancellation Question

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, and I am cancelling my Rogers contract, as a few months ago, I was transferred to a work site that does not receive reception from Rogers, as there is only a Bell/Telus tower in the area.

When my phone is cancelled, will it still be locked, so that if you ahve Telus or Bell, you will be forced to pay extra to unlock it, or when it is disconnected, does the cell phone provider automatically unlock the phone?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Knowing how telecom companies operate, what do you think is the answer?

They'll make you buy out the device if there's anything left owing on it (i.e if it was discounted with contract, tabbed, etc.) and they'll want you to pay the $50 unlock fee.

I'm sure you can haggle or talk them into throwing that in since you're paying them a bunch of cash anyway, so good luck!!

^ what he said.

the big operators in Canada = the devil.

there is literally no limit to the "screw over the customer" tactics in play day to day in my workings with these organizations.

Pay out the contract, get a new phone on a Bell or Telus contract and sell the S3 (or the S5 for more money) on Kijiji.

Could this not be grounds to ask your employer to pay for the cancellation? I mean, they're transferring you, right? Its causing you to lose cell phone service...

There is no cancellation fee if you can prove your address to them and if they don't provide service there. My brother, years ago, worked in fort mac for a year or two and was able to cancel his rogers contract w/o a fee because they could not provide service there.

He just had to provide them with a proof of his address and they cancelled it.

If it is a work site there is probably no new address.

I second using the unlocking sites. I have unlocked several phones and it is really easy.

As for Rogers, they are only good if you plan to stay in major cities in the west. Their coverage is terrible outside of that.

So he got a SUBSIDIZED phone a few months ago and now needs to cancel his contract due to lack of coverage. Rogers is likely asking him for the amortized balance of his subsidy and $50 to unlock his phone(he can unlock his phone cheaper from ebay or wherever). How is this a rip off? I hate Rogers but the government has made people really feel like they are victims.
