Sorry if this a fata.

An interesting read about Luongo's tenure in Vancouver, its fans, the city's media, told through the eyes of a Flames fan.

Living in Vancouver for the last seven years, I can echo many of the sentiments in the article about the city's relationship with the team. The sports media here is so relentlessly awful and quick to point fingers and it bleeds over to the large number of casual fans here. Every team has bandwagon fans - the Flames are no exception - but the bandwagon relies on the media to keep it on course, and when the front page of the sports section is jumping to conclusions and advocating for drastic reactionary measures, well, that's what your fans are going to be like too. If the sports talk radio and the newspaper said that Luongo sucks, well, you better trade him. It's made me extremely sympathetic towards Lu because not only did he get jerked around by his own team, but the entire city turned on him every time he had a bad game.
When the Canucks are winning, the fans are insufferable because the media (sometimes literally) starts planning the parade. When they're losing, no one cares. At all. The apathy in the city over the Canucks right now is amusing. Watching the implosion close-up while the Flames are having an awesome first year of the rebuild has been very enjoyable.

Very good piece!
As a goalie I can agree with pretty much everything in that article.

The article lines up to the old mantra that you don't know what you've got until it's gone. The 2014 season may be the end of their run at the top, they need to start shopping for 2 new plots in the goalie graveyard.

I was never sure why Vancouver focused all its attention on Roberto Luongo for its failures. I guess when you have two world class goalies it's natural that you wonder if the other guy could do a better job, but Vancouver's problem was never the goalie. We're seeing that now.

I really enjoyed that article, great insight into Luongo and the city, thanks for posting.
I couldn't help myself here, but I laughed at this from the comments:
"The Canucks wouldn't even need a goalie, if their team's play was anywhere near as defensive as a Vancouverite talking about how world-class their city is."

For me it started after they lost in the finals. He stopped flipping his mask off every time someone skated by him.
He was a shameless and unapologetic flopper, whiner and diver and it was when he knocked all of that crap off and developed a sense of humour that my opinion of him started changing.
But prior to that SCF loss he was insufferable.

Brilliant article. Koentges is such a great sports writer. If I owned a newspaper, he'd be my first hire haha.
He really breaks down what (may have) went through Luongo's head throughout his career in Vancouver. The self-deprecating humour on Twitter was/is a brilliant tactic.

I've said it before, but Luongo's transformation from 7uongo to a fan favourite has been absolutely fascinating to watch the last few years.

I don't really hate Luongo, it's just that I hate the Vancouver media and the Canucks fans claiming that he is a Superman and I hated that Luuuuuu chant. The Canucks didn't do the guy a favour when they named him as Captain of the team. A goaltender is their captain??? Then he started flopping like the other Canuck players everytime he gets touch. I actually like him now that he is playing for Florida but he will never be a favorite of mine.
