Check the sensor lights first, they should be solid yellow and solid green (one on each side), if they are flashing/off they are out of alignment. Otherwise, see how many times the light blinks and look it up int he user manual (probably available online). Mine has been acting up from the sunlight, if I shade the sensor a bit it goes down like normal.

What happens when you kill power to the door opener, manually release the door to the bottom, and then re-engage the opener to let it catch?

Is the movement of the door getting impeded by anything? There a sensor with most of the garage door mechanisms that detects if the motor is struggling to open or close door, so it will reverse. There is a dial to adjust that.

So much that it wakes my newborn up after I had spent an hour getting her to sleep by singing every song I know the words to, and several modified remakes of 80's hair bands that you thought you had forgotten. Sneaking out of the room and closing the door was akin to a 70's horror scene. Needless to say I am disappointed, and not just because there's no recording contract on the horizon for me after my command performance.
Glad to hear it worked for others, but my 2-year old home with solid wood doors was too much for it. Am I really taking the time to write a review on Home Depot? When did I get so old? Time to go practice chasing kids off my lawn I guess. After that I may undertake a scathing writing campaign to all that said life was meaningless without this product. "

Ok bit old - but only 2 weeks
Does it actually get to the floor then magically open later - or does it reverse during operation?
If it's reversing during operation - probably a combination of needs a bit more force (ie you probably need it serviced) - or photoeyes are just a bit off, and the track twists a bit causing eyes to loose sight of eachother...
If it's just randomly opening - Disconnect the wall button from the opener (depending on vintage, it'll be a screw terminal with a red square beneath it - or a push to release clamp style that's also red. See if that resolves it - if it does... Congratulations - you've got mice, or a staple shorting that wire... Rerun a new wire.
The other 'new' random opening scenario of late - is the new chamberlain security+2.0 remotes have been seen to magically open some older openers.

Can you expand on this? My garage door opener will open at random sometimes and I have no clue how to troubleshoot it since it only happens once every couple of weeks. Any way to prevent this?

Starting point - would be to disconnect the wall station from the opener...
Depending on brand - it's usually the single pair (the photoeyes have 4 wires, the wall station will have just one pair). See if the problem goes away (and your remotes will work in the interim to open/close as usual).
The new Security+2.0 remotes - tend to cause issues mostly with OLD yellow learn button chamberlain (and craftsman) these are pre-photoeye openers. And some of the older stanley DIP switch openers, I've also seen one genie where it popped up. If it's come up - for this reason, it's probably time for an upgrade
On that same note - http://www.homedepot.ca/product/cham...-opener/937038
239 for the whisper drive - with the internet gateway (ie cellphone command/control and alerts) is a smokin' deal. *cough* and I know a guy who can install it for ya too.

What does disconnecting the wall button do? Also, should I disconnect the keypad control?

95%+ of the time... Unexpected openings are due to a short in the wires to the wall station. Either a staple gone too deep or mouse damage... Rule that out first.
Most keypads have been wireless for a VERY long time - or at least don't work on a short to open principle (needless to say those were short lived)

I had an older Craftsman door that was opening randomly, or when it was really cold. The repair people looked at it and a new board was about $200. Decided to go with a whole new opener for about $400 installed. The newer opener is better because the code gets re-set every time. I can look up later the actual product, cost and who did the work. I was happy with the service. It has not opened randomly once.

I had a problem with my door seemingly opening randomly (it is also possible my kids forgot to close the door), naturally I had dreams of going to work and the door opening, so I bought this from HD:
http://www.homedepot.ca/product/univ...troller/839369
This device is pretty slick as I get alerts on my phone and ipad when the door opens or closes and I can tell from my phone if the door is opened or closed. Great piece of mind.
Since I bought this thing my door has only acted up once as my showed it opening at 4.32 am one morning and closing a few minutes later.
I also bought guards to protect the photo electric eyes to hopefully prevent them from getting out of alignment.
That price above is a great deal for an opener and all the toys.......
