Says that him and Hartley would have a fist fight if he tried to tell Bob to tank.
Awesome.
Goes on to praise Bob for all the hard work he has put the team through and how he has got everyone to buy into the fitness, hard work and the whole system.

Hoping Hartley is still the coach next year. Rhett was giving praise to Gelinas as another source of the hard work and dedication

I think Burke keeps this coaching staff, I dont think he had plans to but the way Hartley has these players going its hard to get rid of him.

Burke was talking about how in Toronto he drafted with an Ontario flavour on purpose.. I am having trouble remembering time lines but Burke was around when the Flames went after all those Alberta boys last summer correct?
Pretty straight forward interview but always interesting to listen to Burke. He is so candid, I love it.
The mission is to win as many games as possible, that will never change, if they ever tried to tank Hartley would want to fight him.. thinks that Hartley deserves recognition for the work ethic and system he has got this team to buy into.
They talked a lot about his Toronto days obviously being on Toronto radio, but basically said if he could do the Kessell deal again today he would. He thinks it was a trade that benefited both teams immensely. I might have to agree with him there, Kessell has been an absolute beast this year and Boston has also done really well with the players they got.

Regardless of whether Burke wants Hartley around, it would send absolutely the wrong message to can him this summer.
In just one season this ragtag group has developed a defined identity as one of, if not the hardest working teams in the NHL. They have gone from a group that had a really intense training camp, to a team that now had that single training camp define their season, and maybe even the rebuild.
Last night was a perfect example, how many teams would have sat back at 6-1? These guys just kept pushing. The ducks just looked shellshocked.

Nah, Burke was hired september 5th, well after Galiardi, Russell and Knight were brought on board.

I was on the fence when Burke canned Feaster and Wiesbrod that Hartley may be on his way out at the end of the season but I feel he's at the very least going to get to coach out his deal. After that it's really going to be determined by the incoming GM. He may have his own guy or he may be fully compatible with Hartley. Hard to predict really as I thought Feaster wouldn't be fired until the end of the season so you just never know.

If Hartley were to get canned he would probably be at the top of the list of candidates for every team looking for a new coach at that time. What he has done with this group is almost unbelievable.
No way he goes anywhere and he deserves all the praise he gets.

Getting a team to bottom 5 in the NHL 2 years in a row is not unbelievable at all.
This team has huge defensive issues that has nothing to do with talent and the PP looks like 5 tyke guys thrown out there for the first time ever at times.
The hard work is nice but most teams would like to see a coach that is able to do more than yell and scream at kids and actually input some systems/teaching that helps the team win games.

They were 25th (6th from last) last season, e.g., not bottom-five.

Its almost as if you always have the opposite opinion. I think this is once again indicative of your expectation levels being somewhat unrealistic.
This team was pegged to be the worst team in the league. It isnt. Something must be going well...

It's far more than "nice", it's great, and will pay dividends in the future.

I don't think such an open-ended contract would be a good idea.

I predicted them to be 28th at the start of the season, they are 26th. I don't think that is some great accomplishment or expectation levels being unrealistic.
I am not saying fire Hartley but I don't see anything he has done that wants me to see him stay beyond maybe next year and nothing out of him that you wouldnt get from a dozen other run of the mill coaches.
His systems and teaching seem especially awful.

Come on moon, seriously? Who suggested this? These kinds of comments just aren't useful.
As for the topic, agree with Burke's comments and I think Hartley's done a great job with the team instilling that pack mentality with the consistent effort every night. No complaints here.

It was a joke based on me being one spot off as those bottom 5 or bottom 6 switched the argument at all.

Getting a team with this level of talent to be competitive night in night out is a huge success and is not an easy thing to accomplish.
As for your argument that the defensive issues are not talent related, what are you basing that on? We haven't had any bonafide talent to work with on the backend all year outside of Gio and smid(from a strictly defensive standpoint), are you suggesting that if we had weber and doughty instead of butler and o'brien they would still struggle due to hartley's system?
The pp needs some work I'll give you that but considering gio, glencross and cammaleri have been out for extended periods this season I think you're expecting a little bit much out of the more inexperienced players we've had to put in to replace them, it's hard to expect a power play to run smoothly when your number 1 unit looks different week to week and can't develop any chemistry.
My point in my original post was that Hartley has these guys playing much greater then the sum of it's parts. In my view that is a big accomplishment and should be applauded, if you don't share that opinion then we'll have to agree to disagree.
