Default P Mueller wants back to the NHL

Whilst he left to play in Europe as he couldn't get an NHL contract, a lot of that may have been because he couldn't stay healthy. He has now played two full seasons without any major injuries and wants to return to the NHL.

Whilst there are many that think we should continue working our kids into the line up, which I agree with, Mueller does have some interesting points. He is listed as 6' 2" and is a right shooting RW, which we are short on. He was a 1st round draft pick (8th overall) and is only 25, so there is still some potential there.

I think he is worth a look for next season, at worst we get a good player for the Heat and at best 2nd line RW or more.

1 year two-way deal or a 1 year one-way deal with incentives (similar to Cervenka... can the Flames do that?) would make sense for both parties.

Gives the Flames someone that could potentially play in the top 6 on the wing with minimal risk and gives Mueller a chance to earn a longer contract on a team that has plenty of opportunities on its roster.

Can he play RW?

Might be an option there... one way deal with incentives is about the best he can hope for I think.

I'd prefer to give him a camp try out though, see if he can out perform or even push our kids to earn that spot. This is the closest thing you will find to a 'perfect time' to take chances on guys like this..

In before the KIDS NEED TO HAVE THESE SPOTS NOT WASHED UP HAS BEENS!!! If the kids are meant to have that spot then they will earn it ahead of him, no problems!

I think if he really wants back he will take a two way deal but if a team offered him a one way he would go there first.

This is definately the type of reclamation project we should be looking for but could we get him on a camp try out or do you think someone else takes a risk on him first and signs him??

I wouldn't be against a one year deal. Has led the Swiss league in goals this season. Decent size, right handed, can play RW and is still only 25. Would be worth a shot. Good for him that he's stayed healthy for two seasons now, as that has always been the biggest concern with him.

It seems that a one-year deal is really slanted in favor of Mueller.

When Cervenka was signed he had leverage. He was the best player not playing in the NHL. If the Flames didn't make him that offer some other team certainly would have.

If he was as above exceptions to an equal amount as it turned out he was below expectations.... ie he scored 40 goals. and after his first season became a UFA there would be a 20% chance he would be a Flame and not pick his favorite team (that gave him a 6 year 6M) as a Free Agent.

It would make more sense from the Flames perspective to have him on a 3-year deal two-way deal where they could bury him in the minors if he doesn't work out but have him locked up for 3 years if he actually plays up to his #8 overall draft expectations.

I would give him a foot in the door with the Flames if it was a one-year deal. The worst case scenario is that he bombs and is gone next year. The best case scenario is that he does well enough that he can at least be traded for something or possibly re-signed.

I think this team is at a point that it can take these sorts of chances.

Not a bad idea to try out in training camp, but hard to imagine giving him a guaranteed role. He'll have to earn it over one of the younger guys if he looks like he still has some gas left in the tank.

Cervenka was a two way contract because he had to be signed to a ELC per the CBA. Feaster gave him max bonuses and an European assignment clause so he wouldn't be assigned to the AHL.

Mueller doesn't qualify for performance bonuses under the CBA. I believe in the last Peter Mueller thread it was established that he didn't miss 100 days in his last NHL season.

The guy has some great skills, I think the biggest complaint was that he wasn't exactly a hard battler for a guy his size.

Of course he does, but does the NHL want back in to Peter Mueller?

Smells like a Vancouver signing. I think they are going to go hard for reclamation projects under 30

I'd kill to have Mueller on the Flames. Great age. Great skill set and a desire to earn a spot. Perfect combo to be a Flame these days. I think it was a smart idea going to Europe to play for a year. Get back into the game and a chance to see if those concussion symptoms return without putting himself in too much risk.

Hope he signs here.

I think you can still get bonuses based on games played thou... isn't that the deal that Iggy signed with Boston so they could could fit him under the cap?

Regardless, I'd certainly invite him to camp and I'd probably be willing to sign him to a one year deal. Worst case is that he's done as an NHL player and he plays for the Heat/Aces/goes through $125.00 waiver.

Iginla is a 35+ year old contract.

The only contracts that qualify for performance bonuses are ELCs, 35 year old or older contracts, and players that missed 100 days or more due to injury in their previous year in the NHL
