Attn: Woodlands/Woodbine Residents - Huge Telus Cell Tower Proposed in Athletic Park
Hey everyone, a bunch of us went to an info session yesterday about a hideous tower being built in the Woodbine Athletic Park for Telus.
NOBODY at the Telus info session had any performance issues with their Telus phones, and Telus had a bunch of PR crap with misleading graphs, irrelevant statistics, and no real quantifiable statistics to support this ugly thing.
I wrote a letter against this tower to Mayor Nenshi & Diane Colley-Urquhart, and I urge you to do the same.

So why do you think Telus is building it if it isn't needed?
My parents live in Woodlands and my dad dropped Telus because of the terrible signal.
MOD edit: Do you really need to quote the entire first post?

I like good signals, but not at the expense of my backyard.

"Looms" over.
It's a cell tower, not the tower of Barad-dûr. Stuff like this reeks of nimbyism.

I don't think the proper way to go about this is saying that it is not needed. Just say it is ugly and you don't want it in your neighborhood and Telus can find another place for it.
I remember in the 90's my community fighting Telus over cell tower placement in a greenspace. The community won and Telus had to put the tower on top of a residential building, which makes much more sense than planting it in a greenspace.

I am surprised it is not being built on the reserve.
Also, please make the photo bigger.

Just because it's the cellular age doesn't mean people can't be concerned about what goes in their neighborhoods.

What's the concern?
Yes, it's not the prettiest thing but these things are easily ignored once in place. They're infrastructure, infrastructure that's needed. It's going to go somewhere and more will go up with it somewhere else. It's a not in my back yard mentality.

If your defense is that your cell phone signal is strong so you don't need a tower, you might want to understand how the umbrella cell infrastructure work, unless you are going to assume that Telus won't point it out. There are 2 areas that get poor signal from a cell tower. The obvious one is far away, outside a certain radius from the tower. The other, less obvious is right near the tower.
So, for you to get good signal, someone needs to have a tower near you, but not too near you. This means that while Telus might not be telling the complete truth about the signal strength in your exact area, they also need to consider surrounding areas. Those areas contain towers that make the Woodbine/Woodlands area have good signal.
That said, it is a cell phone tower. Its like 20'x20' of space that is taken up. No sight lines blocked or issues other than it was ugly and 300m tall. So complain, but its not a hill I would want to die on, that's for sure.

Better learn to live with it 90% of the time those town hall meetings are just to say that they had one they will "address" the concerns of the residents but it goes up anyways.

Where else should they put it? I grew up in Woodbine, and that park honestly seems like a fine place to put a cell tower IMO. Like MMF said, its infrastructure, and its needed in the area

Stupid companies using irrelevant statistics and PR crap to build a tower that clearly isn't needed. Why can't they waste their money somewhere else.
Telus Business Plan:
1) Spend money on useless/unneeded cell towers
2) ???
3) Profit!!!

Woodbine is kind of a dump, I see this tower as an improvement.

As I said, I am surpirsed they have not put it up on the reserve. They would avoid all these issues, and it seems that it would service the same area.
Also, please make the that picture bigger.

Isnt there a church nearby that could use a 'new and improved' steeple? I thought they liked to hide them there.
