Goaltender Log Jam. What would you do?
I like Berra, yes I know it was only the Oilers but still I think there is something there, and I would hate to trade him for a 5th round pick and see him take off elsewhere. I also like Ramo, any goalie that can be above .500 record on a team like this after an extended leave from the NHL also means something. Add in Ortio's surprising rise, Gillies has become the best goalie in Hockey East if not the NCAA. Even Olivier Roy has turned out not to be the bag of pucks he was first reported to be. Assuming Gillies wants to turn pro next year, where would you slot everyone next year?

Berra and Ramo again for Flames. Ortio and Roy heat. Gillies goes for another year or two in college. Mac is dropped or traded . I wouldn't call it a log jam. If there was multiple ppl that have showed they are legit starters for this league then yes but all the Flames have is possibilities.

I think Berra deserves an extension to his NHL tryout. Assuming the year ended right now and the camps and pre season don't tell us anything different, I'd go with Berra and Ramo up here, Ortio and Roy in Abby. Gillies start as a 3rd stringer in Abby and depending on performance him or Roy goes to Alaska. Don't bother re-signing Joey. I like him but we have enough goaltenders to have a need for an aging backup.

I think you go with Ramo and Berra again. Hopefully we sign Berra to a another year's extension so we can get a better look at how he is doing. Ever since Ramo got injured he has really stepped up his game and has really impressed us. He doesn't seem that floppy anymore.
I think Ortio should take another year in the AHL. No doubt he'll become one of our best in a few years.
For now, I like our Ramo-Berra system. I like it when they have to earn their playing time.

Yup reflects what I said but the factor is if they even can get Gillies signed. Would of thanked it but out of thanks because of Healy.

Agree with Btimbit - but I think I would like to see Ortio play 3-4 more games this season on the Flames and then reevaluate then.

OP mentioned assuming Gillies gets signed and goes pro so I went with that. More realistically he goes back to school. 20 is real young for a goaltender, I'd hope people aren't expecting him to wear a Flames jersey full time for a few years.

I still think Berra can be a decent backup. He still needs some work but the talent and athleticism is there.

I don't see any reason for the Flames to get rid of either Berra and Ramo. I'd be happy to see both of them back with the big club next year. It's not like we're going to be pushing for a playoff spot next year and if we are, then one of Ramo and Berra must be playing lights out anyways.
I also don't think there's any reason to rush Ortio to be playing in the NHL. I think Hrudy said that Martin Jones played three years in Manchester. Nothing wrong with having Ortio play another season in Abbotsford with spot duty with the big club.

Was thinking the same when Hrudey had said that. LA. Had a few good goalies ahead of him tho . there is nothing wrong with a guy sitting down there tho. I'm sure Joni is just happy to b close then sitting in HFIK.

We've been spoiled by Kipper for many years.
I think Berra and Ramo are both pretty bad. What worries me about both Ramo and Berra are their rebound control. They both seem to just kick it out front, which creates big problems for us. Further, with Berra (who I think is worse) makes some routine saves look hard. That 'bicycle kick' save, while really fun to watch, could've probably been just a blocker. And sometimes he just tries to throw his body forward at pucks and it looks plain awkward.
That said, although I'm not a fan of either, I think they're good enough for now. We're in rebuild mode, and we really shouldn't rush our 'real' goalie prospects - Ortio and Gillies. The brief glimpse at Ortio was intriguing. Although he plays deep in the net, he seemed like he has great potential. Mostly I was happy with his rebound control. In my mind, the sign of a good goalie is how they handle rebounds. Case in point, Kipper in 03-04. He hung on to everything. We had 20 shots a game not just because of the defense but because Kipper was a sponge.

Dump Berra for whatever you can get for him. He's a sieve and lets in bad goals at the worst time. Very suspect glove hand and constantly out of position looking for the puck. Hopefully what we can get for him turns into something and limits the damage of the Bouw trade as Cundari is probably done with our organization.
Keep Ramo and sign or trade for a 1a/1b to ride tandem with Ramo. Ortio is number one in Abby and Roy can be backup to start. Let them compete for ice time. Gillies can refine game in college but if he goes pro send him to Alaska.
Need solid G during the rebuild to ensure our kids have a chance to win and that a culture of losing does not set in. Berra's bad goals could have that effect if he sticks around which would be a mistake IMO.

Gilles could be the Flames future ace, but he's a ways off. Outside of him, I don't think any of the goalies in the Flames system look to be on track to become more than journeymen or backups.
If a team shopping for a Cammalleri has a guy in his 20s that the Flames think can be their #1 near and long term, I think they should jump on it. Don't know enough about Jones in LA to say I want the Flames to target him, but that's the type of player.

I think at this point all flames fans would agree that its the up most importance we do no rush goalie prospects. I would like to see no more karlsson or Irving experiences , and to a lesser extent Taylor. In my opinion the had potential that play a regular nhl season. I think management rushed them to fast . They were looking for a replacement for kipper right away while they denied a rebuild would be best. At least that management was released and the healing g may now begin. #wearenotblueandorange.

Yeah, Ramo and Berra should get nearly a free ride from fans and the organisation this year. We won't even count this one against them as they were put into a very tough situation with this team, particularly stepping into Kipper's shoes.
Go with the two again next year and it starts to count - let's see how you do boys.

I think Ramo and Berra have been fine. I do think that with Ortio knocking on the door though, we will need to make some room and Berra will be the odd man out. He should have some trade value though and I think he is an NHL back-up at the very least (therefore, we should get something for him).

If we stay with the same goalies, minus MacDonald I can see a log jam in two years. Ortio will be fine as he can be sent down without waivers for next season but the year after a decision needs to be made. Gillies could be knocking on the door in a year and half also.

Gillies is a couple of years away so he needs to stay where he is and get his reps. I think we need to roll with Berra and Ramo next year. Berra has gotten a bit of flack lately but there was a good 5-8 game span where they were going with him over Ramo. I see a lot of excellent qualities in Berra and only expect him to get much better- as he has been doing for the most part- same as Ramo. Roy will no doubt be back with Abby next year and barring either one of Berra or Ramo really going south, Ortio with be with him. I'm not ready to jump on the Ortio wagon just yet as he has only played ONE game and the NHL has much better players, shooters, than the AHL so let's not get ahead of ourselves on what he has done in the AHL and thinking he is the next coming of Kipper.
