Default Broadsword Online (Rob Denton) takes over UO and DAoC

What does the transition to Broadsword mean for Dark Age of Camelot?

EA/Mythic and Broadsword are working really hard to make sure that this transition is as smooth as possible. On February 5th, you shouldn’t notice a thing. Going forward, we hope to bring about some exciting new changes, improved Customer Support, and increased correspondence with the DAoC community.

Broadsword’s dedicated team will also work to modernize and improve existing DAoC content, complete long-awaited improvements to The Camelot Herald, and establish compelling new features for Dark Age of Camelot, both in-game and out.

MMORPG.com interview:

This happened earlier in the month but I figured it might spark some talk on this board since I know a number of posters played UO and/or DAoC.

Essentially what it means for these games is that Mythic/EA has leased the game out to Denton and his company Broadsword. They will take over all of the care taking and development of the game and Mythic will still handle the billing.

A lot of talk around the internet about this and what it means for these games. So far it seems they are trying to get back to the old ways a bit with bringing back the Herald, MyUO, counselor program and increasing community-developer interaction with the Team Leads for UO. Not hard to increase from 0 though, but still I give them credit.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out of these old games and the effect is has on their existing playerbase and returning players. I will admit it has peaked my interest about possibly playing DAoC again.

I would still go back if they did a uo classic shard.

Gotta give me my classic shard before I consider coming back.

I'd prefer pre-UOR, but would still consider a UOR pre-16 version.

If the modernized the graphics engine and game play for DAoC I'd hop back into it. Never found PvP like it in any other game.

This is going to come off as a dick response but it isn't meant to be. I have seen that around the internet a lot and am just curious what that means? Modernize.

Does that mean having 4 action buttons that switch depending on weapon and being able to roll around in circles on the battlefield?

I say this because the last few that I have tried including released and unreleased MMO's had horrible, horrible combat systems. Like god awful I want to claw my eyes out bad.

Didn't come off that way at all. I just find that character movement and controls in DAoC were a bit clunky compared to that of most modern games. The movement isn't as refined and things like strafing didn't feel as natural. I mostly, however, meant a modernization of the graphics engine as it's pretty tired and could use an update.

Otherwise, like I said, it was a fantastic game and I have nothing but fond memories of it.

Ahh ok that makes sense to me and yes I do agree it has clunky controls. Not nearly as smooth as modern games, totally right. For some reason I always just jump to the bard parts about modern games..

I know they are working on improvements to the UI and controls so it might be worth keeping an eye on.
