Cities flying pride flags during Olympics; Support it?
I thought Canada was making amazing progress in equal rights and the stigma of those in the LGBT community. And I always boast to non-Calgarians about how progressive Calgary has become and how we're nothing like the conservative "we're all afraid of the gays and liberals" city we were 15 years ago.
The Sun ran an article a couple days ago with Rick bell expressing outrage that Calgary was one of the last cities to join in, and apparantly, pretty reluctantly, too. Which was pretty dissapointing in itself (Hopefully Bunk can shed some light on what happened there?)
Then they ran a follow up article today, showing a poll where 85% of respondants were upset that the flag is being flown to protest Russia's treatment of the LGBT community. 85% ****ing percent.
Please tell me that's just "Sun Reader syndrome" and not even close to being a representation of our city.
I spend a lot of time dispelling the myth that we're a bunch of redneck, ultra-conservative dumbasses, so I was pretty taken aback to see that poll.
Mods, could we throw up a poll here, to see a CP representation?
We'll keep it simple to get the most accurate result;
1. Do you support the Pride flag being flown at City Hall, during the Olympics?
2. Do you not support the Pride flag being flown at City Hall, during the Olympics?

I'd definitely prefer #1 over #2, but to be completely honest, I don't really care

Fixed.
Also, never read anything into the results of an online poll from a newspaper, especially the Sun.

It's a nice gesture I guess, but in the end it doesn't accomplish anything - Russia won't care that victoria or calgary are raising rainbow flags.
I'm more option 3 - don't really care (if i had to chose between the 2, it's obviously #1)
But i think we should care more about the issues we have in canada, than care about russia just because the olympics are hosted there

stuff about gay people shouldn't be news anymore. That's how you get to true acceptance.
It doesn't matter, fly a flag, don't fly a flag. Pretty sure the world knows Canada is tolerant with respect to homosexuality.

Exactly. No time for not huge issues, gotta save all the time for the big issues. Stop discussing not the bigger issues!

I feel if you have to raise the rainbow flag, you should raise every single other flag of the oppressed cultures, religions and lifestlyes. We're fighting for equality here right? With flags? Hang em all or none at all.

Someone Tweeted Jim Watson (mayor of Ottawa) saying that he should "prioritize building bridges over publicity stunts." Since the city had to sideline all its other operations to put up a flag.

haha, saw that. The "let's not discuss this, there's bigger issues" is the oddest opposition to discussing like this, out there.
If you're too busy to give an opinion on an issue on CP then how do you have time for CP at all? You should probably shut down your computer right now and accompish all the things!!!
"I don't care" at least makes sense. It's a little odd to have that opinion on equality, and things that show support for the LGBT community, but to each their own. But saying there's bigger issues so why are spending time discussing this, just makes no sense.

Apparently to have a flag outside city hall you need a formal proposal from an individual or group to have it done, no one had come forward to the mayor's office by the time the Olympics started. That's what I read at least when it was first reported. Doesn't seem like a big deal, they were just waiting for it to go through the proper channels and when other Cities started to just put the flag up Calgary made the decision to follow along. No big deal.
Also, #1.

Right, so if I'm going to support my gay brother, I better also spend just as much effort worrying about North Korea?

Just don't ask me, a flag is hardly going to solve any problems for anyone. Just going to piss off people against it.

Well, who do you feel is being repressed? Go to city hall and see what they say, maybe there's something they can do.
Better yet, bring up your issues with Bunk on CP, he works for the mayor, he can probably help you out.
