2026 - should Calgary bid?
Russia in 2014, South Korea 2018, almost certainly Europe 2022 (Oslo is a favorite). Going back to North America seems a likelihood. The US hasn't shown much interest in a Winter bid, but perhaps a place like Denver or Reno-Tahoe could step up. I'd think they're more interested in a Summer 2024 bid. In Canada, Quebec City still has an Alpine ski problem (no adequate mountain) and Toronto has already indicated they won't seek 2024.
Are the stars aligned? Is it worth it? Is it too soon to Vancouver? Would Calgarians support a bid? Only realistic chance for new arena and stadium?
Mods, could we get a poll?
1. Absolutely!
2. Yes, but not until 2030 or later
3. No

Would the IOC even consider coming back to an Olympic City for a second go around?
I wouldn't support it if it ended up costing $51 billion, but would certainly welcome it if the benefits from hosting again outweigh the costs and negatives.
The winter Olympics bring this Country together. The government has spent a lot of money on the own the podium program, but when we get to see the results and feel the pride, I think it's money well spent. What we spend on sport is a fraction of a fraction of the federal budget. For something that gives so many so much joy, it is certainly worth the investment.
If an investment in Calgary can be shown to have a net benefit to Canada, I think that is great and something we should support.

I would be all-in for a Calgary Olympics. My first introduction to Calgary was watching the 88 Olympics as a small kid in Austria, and it seemed like an amazing event. I can't imagine how great it must've been to attend in person.
It would be a great incentive to fast track some infrastructure and a fantastic way to create memories for a new generation.

I was on the short list to be a volunteer back in 1988 and would love to have another chance in 2026.

Yes, it has been done before. London is a very recent example.

London has hosted 3 times now. But doesn't Toronto want a summer Olympic bid? I'm guessing any chance Calgary has of getting a 2nd winter games would depend on how successful their bid is

IIRC...London, Paris, Los Angeles, Athens, Lake Placid, Innsbruck and Tokyo have all hosted 2 or more times.

Toronto has already announced a pass on 2024.

Yep, and St. Moritz has also hosted the games twice. Chamonix, Grenoble, and Albertville are so close together in the French Alps that it could be said that area has hosted the games 3 times.

Wasn't Calgary deemed one of the most successful cities to hold the Winter Olympics? I say yes, and the timing is perfect with the arena likely being constructed only a few years prior.

I think it's inevitable that Canada will get the Winter Olympics again, and likely around 2026-2034, if we want it.
There are realistically only two cities in Canada who can host the winter games now, Calgary, and Vancouver.
It's Calgary's turn. I think the only question is if Calgary aims for 2026, or later.

^^^ Totally agree. The only two spots than can host the Olympics in Canada are Calgary and Vancouver, no one else can host alpine skiing events with the same proximity.
Calgary has changed so much since 1988, I think it would be incredible to host another games.

The nice thing is, the cost to Calgary would be very low, potentially no more than the cost to host the Vancouver olympics, maybe even less depending on when we get a new arena. The Sochi olympics is expensive due to corruption and many other problems including every facility being brand new. However, here most of the facilities are built, still used for World Cup events, and surely we have less corruption. Calgary is surely the best option for Canada to have another Winter Olympics.

How about a joint Calgary Edmonton bid? They'd almost be forced to build a high speed connecting train between the two cities. And it would truly bring Alberta at least together.

Screw Edmonton. Yes, all the way for Calgary games. We already have most facilities.

Some facilities need serious upgrades and/or facelifts, but getting a new multipurpose building that would house curling would be very exciting. When curling was a demo sport in 1988, the matches were played at the Max Bell. It could probably happen there again, but I would love something new.
You also need a small capacity second arena to house a number of the other hockey games. I'm not familiar enough with the arenas around the city and what might be feasible for the 2,000 - 4,000 range. Perhaps something already exists? (Max Bell?)
