February 17 General Thread
Medal Count (Gold): 6th (4)
Medal Count (Total): 4th (14)
Canada walked away with two medals on Day 10, a Bronze in the Men's Super G representing Canada's first Alpine Skiing medal in 20 years, and a silver from Dominique Maltais in Snowboard Cross. Canada looks to Aerials, Bobsleigh, and Ice Dance for medals on Day 11.
[11 PM] Biathlon – Men’s 15km Mass Start: Event was rescheduled from yesterday. Three Canadians are competing.
[12 AM] Snowboarding – Men’s Snowboard Cross: Four Canadians will attempt to do what Dominique Maltais did yesterday. Canada isn’t as strong in the Men’s race, with our best shots being Christopher Robanske and Kevin Hill, ranked 8th and 9th in the world respectively.
[6:45 AM, 7:30 AM, 10:30 AM] Freestyle Skiing – Men’s Aerials: Travis Gerrits will be Canada’s only representative in Aerials. The 22-year old was 2nd at the Worlds last year, but is 5th on the circuit. While he has the talent to medal, he is wildly inconsistent. His four finishes on the World Cup this year: 1st, 4th, 8th, 16th.
[7:30 AM, 9:05 AM] Bobsleigh – Two-Man Heat 3 & 4: Canadian teams go into the final two runs sitting in 4th, 8th, and 9th after the mess that was the second heat for almost everyone. Four tenths of a second separate 2nd through 11th.
[8 AM] Biathlon – Women’s 12.5km Mass Start: Start list currently unavailable.
[8 AM] Curling – Women’s: CAN (8-0) vs KOR (2-5): Jennifer Jones tries to stay perfect in the final round robin game. All eyes will be on Great Britain’s last two matches, as well as China vs Switzerland. It is Canada’s best interest to not end up in a situation where they have to face Great Britain in the semi-finals.
[8 AM] Figure Skating – Ice Dance Free Dance: Virtue/Moir sit, expectedly, in 2nd. This skate will be their last Olympic skate, and I’m sure they will give it their all. Expect a silver medal but a close competition.
[10 AM] Hockey – Women’s Semifinals: CAN vs SUI. Switzerland surprised many by making the semi-finals, and if Canada can repeat their performance from the round robin, they will easily make the gold medal game.
Other Events:
Ski Jumping – Men’s Team
Curling Round Robin Finishes:
With Curling wrapping up its' tournament, there have been lots of theatrics on the Men's side. Jacobs' has had too many close calls, and they will need to sharpen their skills for the semi-finals. Interestingly, beating China could potentially give Canada a tougher semi-final match. If China beats Great Britain, we will face them again, but if Great Britain wins, we will face Great Britain. Even though we played better versus the Murdoch rink, they are the stronger team and would, on paper, be the tougher match-up.
Similarly, Jennifer Jones faces a similar issue. Depending on how the games play out, they could very well end up playing Eve Muirhead in the semi-finals which would make for an extremely tough match.

Interesting Russia going behind the opponents corner guard.
Eve is going to murder that.
This Russian coach is similar to the Czech hockey coach.

The biathlon has been delayed again, this time by 5.5 hours due to heavy fog. New start time is 4:30 AM.

I like that the Russians don't speak a word of English, except when it's time to yell, "SVEEP! SVEEP! SVEEP!"
I was watching one of the Chinese games the other day and it was the same, out of nowhere, you hear "GOTTA GO!"

看起来不错, gotta go, 它减慢, hurry hard!
It was funny this morning, Harris kept saying "what they're saying is...." and they were conversing in Mandarin!

china is losing to japan, if that holds up GB will be in 3rd (they should win this) and there will be a logjam for 4th going into the last draw, could be a tonne of tiebreakers.

I think the Russian lead is hotter than their skip, and their skip is pretty hot.

Gotta go with the British fourth (I think?) as the hottest (and most vocal) of the bunch.

China made Japan measure just cause it's Japan. That wasn't even close.

More random English in Curling, after the Japan-China game: "Good game. Good game. Good game."
