Default Neighborhood Specific Business Directory

I'm looking for a way to compile a list of every single business in a few different communities. (box stores, doctor/dentist/medical offices, in home salons/businesses, etc etc)

Does anyone know if the City of Calgary has a business directory that's open to the public and if not, where I could find this info that is listed in a neighborhood specific way? Ie: Where can I find a list of every business in Scenic Acres?

i'd have to think that the only place that might have this information is the city because they would have to liscence the majority of businesses.

With all the small/home businesses out there one would think it would be hard for a place like the yellow pages to catalogue.

Let us know if such a thing exsists

I think you can pay the city for a report with this type of information. I don't know how to get it, so call maybe 311.

Most map and directory websites have a search by neighbourhood or postal code feature. Would be a bit clunky as you'd have to try generic searches (eg for the letter 'a' and filter service areas yourself.

There is an API available from yellow media that would be cleaner but depends on what you'd use it for.

Thanks for the help.

Bunk gave me a City website link in another thread, but it doesn't seem to help when I do a search like "silver springs" or "scenic", etc. I get no results.

I tried the Google thing, but know if I do that, I'll still have to drive by most places to confirm, which means I might as well just do that in the first place.

I will call 311 for sure though as that seems, so far at least, to be the best bet. Hopefully.

I remember growing up in NB, our city had a "Directory" that was a hard covered phone book type of thing. It was separated into 4 sections:

You could find street names in the green pages and look at any address on that street and find out who lived there (from census results) and their phone number.

Then, in the yellow pages, you could do a search by name, and find out where they lived and even where they worked.

The white pages were businesses listed, and by street name.

The last one, blue pages, was listed by phone numbers and told you who it belonged to. My father had multiple 1- year old copies of these at home and looking back, it's amazing how intrusive they were. Was hoping Calgary might have something similar.

Maybe not

As for your actual question, yes, a call to 311 might be the best bet to get the information. Or for a real off the wall/you've had no other luck, maybe a library might have some sort of thing for this? Either the public library or a business library (e.g. at the U of C)?
