O'Brien awaits trade. Flames scatter for Olympics.

Quote:
“I saw it coming, so I was prepared for it,” O’Brien says of the demotion. “It’s obviously disappointing. I’m just trying to play well and get up (to the NHL) sooner rather than later.”
Flames boss Brian Burke informed the well-travelled defender that he’ll try to orchestrate a trade. O’Brien, with six NHL stops already to his name, cannot wait.
The last time O’Brien graced the American Hockey League? Back in 2005-06, with the Portland Pirates, whose roster featured names such as Getzlaf, Perry, Penner, Glencross, Ryan, Kunitz, Smid, Konopka.
“Burkie told me . . . he didn’t want to bury me down here,” says O’Brien. “Hopefully, I can take care of my side of the deal and play well down here.”

“Boums (Lance Bouma) and I are heading down to Cabos,” revealed Joe Colborne. “How sweet is that? No fun at all, right?”
While goaltender Reto Berra (Switzerland) and shot-blocking D-man Ladislav Smid depart for Sochi and more (sigh!) hockey at the Olympic Winter Games, the remainder of the Calgary Flames are breaking up, venturing hither and yon, to sun-drenched places and familiar cubbyholes, accompanied by loved one and friends.
“Just me communing with nature,” joked Hartley of his plans. “Where I live it’s such a small village, no one in Calgary can possibly have heard of it. I’m going to play men’s league hockey in the mornings with my buddies and do some four-wheeling on the lake in the afternoons. I’m in a totally remote area. Gravel road. It’s still civilization but I’m still 30 miles from the closest restaurant.
“Perfect.”
Chris Butler’s off home to St. Loo, goaltending guru Clint Malarchuk back to the ranch.
“Just to relax is the plan for everyone I think,” relayed skipper Mark Giordano, in the mix for Sochi recruitment right until the end. “This might be the last chance we have to do this kind of thing mid-season, so it’s a perfect opportunity to spend a few days with the family and forget about the game for awhile.

I hope Burke can find a suitor for O'Brien but I'm not sure if he will be able to find a team willing to take the remaining year of that deal (almost as much as Russell will make next season) without the Flames giving up something else.

If the Flames are willing to eat 50% of his salary then someone will take him off our hands for sure. I think Burke is just waiting for the best possible deal before trading him.

I doubt a team even wants to pay SOB 1.1 mil or more next year. The Flames might have to retain salary, AND take a contract back. It could easily end up SOB is just bought out in the offseason

Voluntarily though and for boat loads of cash. The original sentiment was correct, fantastic life style, but good for him he should enjoy it

Haha, when you're on the Flames this year you don't bother worrying about staying in game shape or anything.

I just cant see them trading O'Brien. I just dont see it working.
Anyone that wants him wont want to pay him his contract and will want us to sweeten the deal, which isnt worth just getting rid of him. Buying him out or waivers seem like the only viable options.

You got that from those pictures how? I guarantee taking vacations during the Olympic break is not unique to the Calgary Flames this year. Also, it is possible to hit the gym while on vacation.

That's a waste of a buyout though because we don't really need to buy him out. If we can't find a deal for him, he'll remain stuck in the minors or on the team as a depth guy.

Well, you had to know this type of comment was coming. You know they cant practice or do anything official with the team right? And players all over the league are doing the same thing.
These breaks the players are doing exactly what they should. Take some time off and recharge for the stretch run.
