Default General Olympics Discussion Thread

I think it would be worthwhile to have a catch-all thread for random observations and event updates that don't necessarily deserve their own thread?

To kick off, snowboard slopestyle qualifications, heats 1 and 2, were this morning. From Canada's end, good and bad news for the two biggest threats for gold. Max Parrot scored the highest of any rider in either heat, but Mark McMorris finished 7th in his heat. Only the top four go through. Sebastien Toutant made it through.

Basically it was pretty baffling to everyone that he was scored so low. I suspect it was because his rail game was weak but I don't know for sure.

There is a third heat, which will be comprised of everyone who didn't make it through the first time (basically everyone who finished fifth or worse in heats 1 and 2). The top four from that heat will go through to the finals. So there's still a pretty decent chance he makes it to the finals.

^ LOL i just wrote the same thing in the what are you watching right now thread.

I agree that the McMorris score was extremely puzzling, he absolutely nailed his run.

To become a top flight snowboarder from the prairies of Saskatchewan is such a great story. Go Mark McMorris I am totally rooting for this kid.

He's a top flight park rider, yeah. I mean what else are you going to do in Sasky. It's like how Nick Goepper is the best ski slope competitor in the field, coming from Bumfudge, Indiana.

Just from watching the slope style qualifying the course really didn't seem to be too extreme to me, and its pretty evident that Shaun White pulled out because he was too afraid to lose.

Shaun White said he dropped out because of a sore wrist, yet Maelle Ricker is competing in border cross with a broken wrist.

And Shaun White is still competing in Half-Pipe and McMorris is doing slope style with a broken rib.

And multiple competitors are doing either slopestyle or halfpipe with fully torn ACLs. Get out of here, sore wrist?

Shaun is protecting his brand - if he isn't even able to qualify for finals, his prestige as a snowboarding icon is lessened.
