How about those Assistant Coaches?
Bob Hartley has been getting a ton of credit and accolades (and deservedly so) for his work as head coach this season. But what about the other guys behind the bench?
Marty Gelinas spent three years as the Director of Player Development for Nashville, where he often helped "coach" prospects with their AHL affiliate. With so many rookies in the lineup this year, I bet Gelly played a big role in getting them ready and teaching them what it's like to be an NHL'er.
Before coming to Calgary, Jacques Cloutier spent 12 years as an assistant coach with the Avs. Have to think he picked up a few things along the way -- even though he only stands 5'7 I gotta think he's respected in that room as well. Hartley certainly trusts him.
Lastly, Clint Malarchuk deserves some credit for (i) helping Karri Ramo transition into a legit NHL goalie, and (ii) working with Reto Berra such that Colorado gave up a second round pick to get him. Bonus points for wanting to confront Tortorella during the line brawl game. You can't teach that kind of emotion.
I'm assuming all of these guys will be staying on next year -- I heard Malarchuk went on a leave of absence late in the season so I hope all is well (I'm not sure if he came back or not).
