This is one old story. I remember it from the late 70's. Not sure why it's being re-told by Smithsonian as new. I also remember that the story was a bit "polished" by the reporter. The patriarch was aware of the civilization and did reach out to the nearby places for some necessities, which he bartered for berries and furs. He was not telling his children about his trips though as he was worried that they'd leave if they find out.
