Buck Shot passes away
Kind of surprised I didn’t see a thread yet, given his impact in Calgary on kids in the 70s and 80s. All Calgary kids who grew up here knew who he was and loved him. Getting him to come to your school was a treat.
RIP to a special man Ron “Buckshot” Barge

It was mentioned in the Celebrity Death Thread, but considering who it is? I think he warrants his own thread.

I watched this show as a kid. Good ol' CFCN Calgary!
I never met him, but by all accounts he was a stand-up guy.

I lived in Medicine Hat in 80 and most of 81 before my family moved to Cranbrook. Still watched the show a lot as a young kid in both of those places. He was a Flames fan is one thing I remember of that show. Sad to hear this.

Absolute legend.
I just read that his show aired for a year longer than Mr Dress-up , which is incredible when you think of the influence he had. It's a shame that this sort of local TV doesn't exist anymore.

He had season tickets. I saw him lots in the 80s and early 90s and if I remember correctly he sat behind the net that the Flames attacked twice (several rows up).

When I was seven, my sister and I and our cousins all went up to CFCN hill on a Saturday morning to be on his show. He was interviewing the kid sitting next to me when I let one rip. He gave me the stink-eye.

You fart in someone's face I think they're owed a little bit of anger.
Children....vile creatures.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve immense respect and admiration for Buckshot and people like him (eg Fred Rogers). Imagine walking down Calgary streets and having people of all ages come up to you and tell how you touched their lives as a kid.
What a joy that would be. Rest in Peace.

I appeared on the show once as a little critter, during kids day at the Stampede, must have been 1994 or 1995. I wonder if tapings of the show still exist somewhere...

Buckshot's guitar is at the National Music Centre. I hope it's made permanent.
Quote:
“I was born 9 months after the Buck Shot Show started in 1967, so I never knew my dad ('Buck Shot') as anyone else. Being the child of a local celebrity was not a big deal to us kids. That was just his job; he was our dad, who had a TV show. Of course it was always fun to get on the show and be a part of entertaining others, but the true impact of how much he meant to kids, and even their parents, didn’t hit until we became older. To see kids’ eyes light up when they saw him, and see adults turn back into kids when they met him; it was a beautiful sight. To this day we still see that reaction from adults and it is beyond heartwarming. For 30 years the Buck Shot Show taught and entertained children through song, entertained adults, and even helped one woman I know learn to speak English. I know that so many families in Calgary remember its longstanding theme song and could hum it by heart today. That song, my dad’s guitar, and the wonderful troupe of characters, including his puppet pal, Benny the Bear, will last in the memories of so many. I am beyond proud and blessed to call Ron 'Buck Shot' Barge my father.”

I agree! I think we need to step back sometimes and admire the Calgarians that make this place special. Its hokey but if you ask lots of visitors especially from the states Calgary is a special place. I feel its the entrepreneur culture thats made this place punch way above our weight.
Buck Shot was such a man to me, a guy who started on his lunch breaks filming his vision and went on to make Calgary a better place, for kids no less.

The guy Loved Calgary, he loved the City he loved music, he loved the kids, he loved life...
For an Eternal Cynic like me? I think that is an attitude to be admired and respected.

I watched Buckshot every chance I got as a little kid, sad day but by all accounts he had a great and fairly long life. RIP, hope someone is still taking care of Benny.

Jim Lewis passed away last year. I imagine that the puppets are with his family.
