So much for taste. Personally, I can't see Bladerunner ahead of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Top sci-fi flicks

Of course, top sci-fi flicks is a misnomer ... kinda like military intelligence or jumbo shrimp.

I still can't sit through 2001 and I'm a sci fi buff. Blade runner was really good, but it wasn't the best

It depends on what your judging them by, for pure entertainment value Star Wars and the Empire Strikes back are two of the best, the return of the jedi being ruined by the damned muppet show.

The Star Trek movies would have been ranked right up there but thier average was destroyed by all of the god awful next generation pictures.

The first Terminator was one of the coolest movies but the second one was destroyed by Edward Furlong, and the third one had a naked woman and some nice action, but didn't really add much to the flick

The top sci fi movie for me though was the first Alien film, atmosphere, suspense, rusty old ships and Weaver in that underwear kapow

The first Terminator movie would be my pick.

Alien is more of a horror movie.

2001: A Space Odyssey.

recently watched Bladerunner again and it wasn't as good as I'd remembered it. Empire Strikes Back would top my list.

2001 is not only the best sci-fi movie ever, it is one of the best movies ever. No other movie has realistically portrayed what space travel for humans would be like.

http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/greatm...e_odyssey.html

The genius is not in how much Stanley Kubrick does in ``2001: A Space Odyssey,'' but in how little. This is the work of an artist so sublimely confident that he doesn't include a single shot simply to keep our attention. He reduces each scene to its essence, and leaves it on screen long enough for us to contemplate it, to inhabit it in our imaginations. Alone among science-fiction movies, ``2001'' is not concerned with thrilling us, but with inspiring our awe

Only a few films are transcendent, and work upon our minds and imaginations like music or prayer or a vast belittling landscape. Most movies are about characters with a goal in mind, who obtain it after difficulties either comic or dramatic. ``2001: A Space Odyssey'' is not about a goal but about a quest, a need. It does not hook its effects on specific plot points, nor does it ask us to identify with Dave Bowman or any other character. It says to us: We became men when we learned to think. Our minds have given us the tools to understand where we live and who we are. Now it is time to move on to the next step, to know that we live not on a planet but among the stars, and that we are not flesh but intelligence.

Terminator is a cartoon in comparison. All fiction, no science.

If you can sit through all of Blade Runner you get a gold star.
Worst movie ever.

Terminator would be my pick.

I'd go with Alien.

Interesting to see Solaris on the list. I haven't seen the original, but I saw the recent one with Clooney. Simultaneously one of the most beautiful and most boring films I've ever seen.

I'm really fond of Gattica--it would definitely be on my top five.

It's always curious to see what movies scientists like. I remember reading an article about time-travel, where they asked all these quantum physicists (or whoever it was that researches time-travel) about what movies most realistically portray the logistics of cause-and-effect in time travel. The vast majority of those surveyed said that Back to the Future was probably the most accurate.

What about Superman?

How can spinning the earth backwards not be realistic.

Come on

Gattaca was very cool.. 2001 is good, but it always annoys me a bit for some reason I can't put a finger on.

The Matrix (the first one, the other two are crap).

Contact was very good IMO, also one of my favorites.

Cocoon was cool too.

When I was a kid I watched Flight of the Navigator over and over.

Rendezvous With Rama is coming out in a few years, anxious to see that one.

Heh, me too! For a while I thought that was the greatest movie ever! Especially the morphing silver spaceship.

That seals it then. Back to the Future is the best sci-fi movie. Damn that's a great show.

For me it would be the Star Wars saga as a whole for top spot
second I would pick Terminator 2
third would go to Planet of the Apes (the original)

I used to hate Gattaca, but I recently rented it again, and enjoyed it.

T2 is one of the best, blows the first one out of the water. Empire Strikes back is another, best of the three.

Personally my favourite is Total Recall (non TBS version) I never get sick of it. Followed closely by the first two Stars Wars and Terminator movies. The first 2 Alien movies are up there and Predator earns an honorable mention. Lastly throw the original Back to the Future in the middle of the pack for good measure.

The non-TBS version goes for all movies though. I caught a bit of As Good As it Gets before I fell asleep last night... its disgusting how much they butcher a movie.

Things like this are so hard to debate because every individuals tastes are so inherintly different. I love 2001 because of its grandeur and the scope of what Kubrick did. It wasn't so much a movie about space as it was a movie about humankind. I love it and never tire of watching it, it is truly a beautiful movie. Other movies of Kubrick's are very similar. Take Full Metal Jacket for instance. Its about Vietnam, but he doesn't just thrust us into the middle of a battle in the jungle, he starts us out in basic training and establishes the characters before they ever go to war. The reason I love movies like these is probably why I hate movies like Spider-Man 2 so much. Don't give me a bunch of special effects with a paper-thin plot behind it and expect me to think its a good movie. Tell a great story and add in the effects later.

Ahh boo.... Spiderman 2 was most certainly not just about special effects. The story line is fantastic in my mine. I love the webbed wall crawler. Boo hiss boo.

What about the The Last Starfighter...a true classic for youth of the 80's.

I haven't seen Tron in a long, long time. Does anyone remember if that movie was good or really boring? I seem to think it was both.

Oh come on! How about the ending!? "How do I stop it Dr. Oc?" , "You can't stop it Peter!", "Oh wait, you could drown it!" Oh good thing he built over top of the river!!! Come on!!!! Don't insult my intelligence with that kind of writing! So lame!
