Brian Rafalski signs with Florida Everblades of the ECHL
perhaps trying to make a comeback?

Brian Rafalski has come out of retirement and will play professional hockey again. Just not in the NHL.
On Thursday the Florida Everblades of the ECHL announced that they have signed the 40-year-old Rafalski, who hasn't played in the NHL since 2010-11 with the Red Wings when a knee issue led him to retire at the age of 37.
However last week in Detroit Rafalski put on the Winged Wheel again for the Alumni Showdown outdoors at Comerica Park and apparently that gave him the itch to play professionally again, thus the deal with the Everblades.
"I'm just excited to get back on the ice again and see where God takes me on this journey," Rafalski said in the Everblades' release.

Thought for sure it was the Panthers when I saw it on the mainpage. Tallon loves signing retreads. Not sure why Rafalski retired so early in the first place, since he still seemed to have some gas left in the tank at 37, but you gotta think it's impossible for him to come back now, unless Chris Chelios is his personal trainer.

Awesome story! I wish him the best of luck! Would be awesome if he could pull a Claude Lemieux-style comeback. Rafalski was a helluva player.

And what do you think those old geezers really miss in Florida?
I think there's a lot of shysters in Florida.

37 year old geezer Brian Rafalski is probably still lightyears better than most ECHL players. I'm sure he'll have a blast. I would think its the travel that would really suck the most.
Always liked Rafalski.

Brian Rafalski, a former Detroit Red Wings defenseman and three-time Olympian trying to make a comeback, received NHL clearance to play Friday night for the Florida Everblades against the South Carolina Stingrays.
“He played in the Winter Classic alumni game and got the bug,” Everblades coach Greg Poss said. “He wants to play in the NHL again.”
Rafalski, 40, is close to the Everblades players because he has been the team’s chaplain the past couple of years.

Screw it. Sign him. We need somebody to log minutes without throwing a young player to the wolves too soon.

The Everglades are a natural region of tropical wetlands located in the southern portion of the US State of Florida.
The Everblades are a minor league hockey team located in Estero, Florida. Their home arena is Germain Arena.

Brian Rafalski’s comeback in pro hockey ended up being a short one.
Rafalski said Tuesday he’ll retire once more.
“I’m done,” he said simply. “My back is no good. That was one of the hurdles.”
Rafalski said his back acted up again after his first game on Jan. 10. He then played on back-to-back nights Jan. 17 and Jan. 18. He had a great lead pass to forward Mathieu Roy that led to a breakaway goal and helped key a rally for the victory over Orlando.
However, he experienced more pain.
“After playing two games, it inflamed the nerves in my back so I’m done,” he said. “I felt like I played pretty well the last game. I was getting my timing and the game seemed to slow down.”
|
Quote:
Rafalski told Everblades coach Greg Poss he wouldn’t be able to make the trip last weekend for games at South Carolina and Orlando. Florida lost all three.
“I’m getting some mobility back,” he said as he bent down. “It feels pretty loose but I can feel when I get down here (inches from his feet).
“There’s no reason to keep going. This is not something you can push or play through or goes away.”
