Default Messier joins Oilers as "advisor to the team"

From Messier's AMA (Ask Me Anything) that he did on Reddit today.

http://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comme...stions/celkaw5

Quote:
Oilfan9911: My question is this: I've seen it reported in a few places that you've rejoined the Oilers, but the local media in Edmonton has been silent on this and I haven't seen any announcement from the team. I was wondering if you have in fact rejoined the Oilers, and what your role is.

MarkMessier: yes. i have joined the oilers as an advisor to the team.

Well if the Flames are any indication, I'd say the writing is on the wall for someone in Edmontons office. I doubt Messier would coach. So I'm hoping Kevin Lowe is the one that is being replaced. Not that I want the Oilers to get better, but I really don't like Lowe. He should've been gone long ago. And the fact that he's part of hockey Canada bugs me.

Nepotism anyone?

Keep living in the past, Oilers. One day mullets & Cameros will come back in style & maybe you won't have another lottery pick to look forward to as the highlight of the season.

Haha awesome. Wait for the official announcement:

Lowe: "We are pleased to announce that Mark Messier has joined the Oilers organization as 'Special Assistant to the Advisor of the Oilers'"
Messier: "So 'Special Assistant Advisor of the Oilers'"
Lowe: "I didn't say that. 'Special Assistant to the Advisor of the Oilers'"
Messier: "Same thing"
Lowe: "Nooo, it really isn't.."

When MacTavish said last year that the Oilers were still paying because of the success they had in the 80's (IIRC he actually used the words "cyclical nature"), I thought he was an idiot but he was actually bang on with his comments.

They are paying right now for the 80's dynasty, but only because that success created a complete fanboy out of Katz, and now he's letting members of that team run the current team to embarrassing results the likes we have never seen before in North American professional sports.

.....and I LOVE it!

Bad news for Flames fans/the other teams because I'm pretty certain Messier will tell it straight up how it is: Klowe and his cronies need to go. Hopefully Messier is a big moose head and tells them to keep the course. But I doubt it. Hopefully somehow this backfires on the Oilers.

So Messier is officially the Oilers Dwight Schrute.

I wonder what the odds are that Eakins gets fired, and they hire Gretzky for his second stint at coaching? If this happens, he better hire McSorely as an assistant to protect him as he walks through the bar 6x a game.

If Messier wants to coach, maybe the guy should earn his way first in the AHL or as an assistant first. You can't just coach by cult of personality.

I actually do want them to get better. I'm getting annoyed at all the high picks they have been hogging.
