Default Spengler Cup update

Canada wins their first game earlier today 5-4 over HC Vitkovice of the Czech Republic. The highlight (or lowlight depending on your point of view) was Patrick Roy's son Frederic losing it in the dying seconds of his team's game (he is playing for the Rochester Americans).

I noticed a few ex Flames on some of the rosters... Byron Ritchie and Jim vandermeer are on Canada. Matthew Lombardi is on the non-Davos Swiss team.

If you ever have the chance to go see the Spengler, GO! It is a ton of fun. Make sure you get a spot in standing room at a Davos HC game, it's just insanity.

Fun fact - Geneva HC (from the video from the op) has a bald eagle as a mascot and they bring it out to fly into the stands at the beginning of games.

(My own pic from 2010)

From the video, it looked like the other guy started throwing punches first.

Losing 5-0 is pretty bad and frustrating but the AHL team has to learn to adjust to the Euro refs and the big ice.

I watched this game and didn't realise that this was Roy's son, they hadn't mentioned that during the game here. What an idiot, he totally lost it at the end and was smashing sticks and kicking doors, didn't give a good impression of himself at all.

Lombo played really well in this game, got himself a couple of goals.

Team Canada is a bit different this year to last when the lockout was going on, no NHLer's this year

Love this tournament though, really want to go one year because the atmosphere is supposed to be amazing.

Gotta love the 1812 overture as the goal song. Who needs Chelsea Dagger when you've got Tchaikovsky?

love the ref's jerseys.....the drywall in fredric's room must be completely full of holes, wonder where he gets that from.

Always interestign to see the names of former NHL'rs in this tourney.....I alwaos wonder what Paul Rominuk does for work the other 355 days of the year......

Here's an article on Romanuk and why he's mostly disappeared from view in Canada:

I'm sure Sportsnet would love to lure him back to Canada since they need play by play guys.

Also Sergei Federov is playing in this tourney as well.
